September, 2006The Openoffice.org Documentation Project is holding a competition for templates and clipart sponsored by Worldlabel.com, and there is prize money! The goal is to increase our trove. Frankly, we don't have enough; users are feeling deprived. That means over 50 million people. You can help change that... and also maybe win some money. Worldlabel which has been long a strong champion of OpenOffice.org, has set aside USD 5,000 for prizes. Winners will also have the option of including their winning entries in the OpenOffice.org installation sets available from the site. If you are interested, visit the Documentation Project for more information. Everyone is eligible and everyone is encouraged to participate. The contest officially starts this week and ends 13 October 2006, on our birthday. Winning entries will be judged by a panel of three and winners will be announced 1 November 2006.
I've noticed that ever since this site's format changed the help forums here aren't quite as active as they used to be. Requests go unanswered for days or weeks. I've used and been grateful for this site for a few years--I never would have been able to install good old woody without help from many people here. Has anyone else thought about what can be done to bring the help forums back to life? Tim (formerly naiveguy) Web Relational Blocks (WebRB) is a browser-based visual editor and run-time environment similar to Dreamweaver, which enables developers to visually assemble enterprise-quality Web applications in the visual editor. WebRB can code, test, and debug development cycles d all irectly from the visual editor without needing to instany software which increases the speed of Web application development. I'm trying to install Debian for the first time, and it wont mount the cd-rom. I'm putting it on a Thinkpad x60, so it doesn't have its own drive. I'm using an external cd-rom, just a CompUSA brand. It goes into the install and when it gets to the detect and mount stage it fails. I can't think of a reason for this since it's running off the cd. I have installed apache2 and I have it running with php4. I am trying to view the phpsysinfo page, but it comes up with open or save document, suggesting its not working the code server side. I have viewed the apache config file but the index.php is present. I have made sure I have installed the usual libapache2 stuff, and also made sure as I want a mysql server running to I have php4-mysql installed as well. After reloading the apache2 server it still wasn't playing ball, so I restarted. But to no avail. Can someone please point me in the right direction, I bet this is a common issue. I am running kernel 2.6.8-3-686-smp (as I have a dual 550mhz compaq 3000 sever) I'm running a Debian Server were some important files where been deleted by an user. He used rm -rf * . I hope so best wishes ceagle05 I have dselected phpbb and mysql. The database is done and works. When I go to the web page I get: The database module for the database you are using, MySQL, is not available. Please (re)install the php4-mysql package or if it's already installed, add extension=mysql.so to the relevant /etc/php//php.ini and restart the webserver if appropriate. So, I went into /etc/php4 and there are 3 folders: apache, cgi, cli. Each dir has the file php.ini and I uncommented the line with extension=mysql.so the restarted apache-perl. Still no luck. Any ideas? No clicks needed. No boring setup processes. No Wine complications. Just one easy script and you’ll get three IE versions to test your Sites. And it’s free and open source. This may be very helpful for software developers and web developers to test their applications. Hi, Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on Hi I have a C++ program "binary" from now on called "A" which lets me int main(int argc, char* argv[]){ could someone please point to a link on how can I use a daemon to fire I have quite a bit of experience on installing Debian over the net using debootstrap and chroot, even on remote machines. I have leased a new server with OpenSuSE 10.1 (32 bit) installed, and frankly prefer Debian as I am more familiar with it. Here is the uname -a :
I would like to install Debian sarge on this machine, and everything goes well up until the chroot - where I get the error:
I suspect that the binary executable was compiled for 64 bit, and the kernel is 32 bit. Anyone have any ideas on what to do? I confess that this is my first 64 bit machine. If necessary I will just install everything in 32 bit emulation - but what a shame to waste such a nice cpu... Habeas Corpus, R.I.P. (1215 - 2006) AUSTIN, Texas - Oh dear. I’m sure he didn’t mean it. In Illinois’ Sixth Congressional District, long represented by Henry Hyde, Republican candidate Peter Roskam accused his Democratic opponent, Tammy Duckworth, of planning to “cut and run” on Iraq. Duckworth is a former Army major and chopper pilot who lost both legs in Iraq after her helicopter got hit by an RPG. “I just could not believe he would say that to me,” said Duckworth, who walks on artificial legs and uses a cane. Every election cycle produces some wincers, but how do you apologize for that one? The oldschool way of manually managing e-mail subscribers, and publishing the news on your website doesn't cut it anymore. This article shows you the modern way with a step-by-step demonstration of implementing a general news publication architecture using RSS and Atom syndication formats. This will diffinetly ease the process, minimize human error and streamline the approach to news feeds. This guide describes how to back up and recover your MySQL databases with mysql-zrm on a Debian Sarge system. mysql-zrm is short for Zmanda Recovery Manager for MySQL, it is a new tool that lets you create full logical or raw backups of your databases (regardless of your storage engine and MySQL configuration), generate reports about the backups, verify the integrity of the backups, and recover your databases. It can also send email notifcations about the backup status, and you can implement multiple backup policies (based on your applications and based on time (e.g. daily, weekly, etc.)). Ad Hoc Development and Integration Tool for End Users (ADIEU) is a programming tool for radically simplified development of Web services and applications. This Web-accessible programming and hosting system provides an environment that lets end users create and deploy dynamic Web pages and Web services without needing extensive knowledge about languages like PHP and Java. Installed Debian 'Sarge' on a 1997 PC. I only have one HD installed (set as master - jumper settings are correct). It is 3.2 GB, so I don't need any DDO or anything for the BIOS to 'see' the whole drive. Before installing I used Win 98 Startup disk to delete all partitions on HD and then fdisk /mbr to erase the MBR. It was therefore a completely clean install. Install seemed to go well. Asked at end if wanted to install Grub, I said yes. Upon restart I get Grub Error 18. This error is apparently caused when the kernel is not close enough to the beginning of the drive for the BIOS to 'see' it. Debian is taking the whole HD, however, so I presume it put its kernel near the beginning of the first partition, so I can't really manually put it any closer to the beginning, can I? I wish the Debian installer was easier to use... I never have any problems installing Windows (ouch!) but I have been trying to install Debian for months and I just keep getting different errors... if I don't get it this time I am just going to give-up on it. Discover the basic concepts of the AWK text-processing and pattern-scanning language. This tutorial gets you started programming in AWK: You'll learn how AWK reads and sorts its input data, run AWK programs, manipulate data and perform complex pattern matching. When you're finished, you'll also understand GNU AWK (GAWK). Like many, I am relatively new to linux. A few years back I used a version of Mandrake for quite some time. I'm interested in trying linux again, and have downloaded debian and ubuntu installs. My I downloaded the most recent "unofficial" 64 bit debian distro. The installation goes well, although the second disc is never used. At one point the installation asks for a second disc, but then doesn't actually use the second disc for anything. The installation finalizes, and restarts, and I'm presented with a command prompt. I was never asked which window manager to install, and I don't know how to start one from the command prompt. I wasn't prompted to install any packages during the process, though, that may be a feature limited to mandrake. So, basically, I install the OS, but I don't have a gui. The IBM alphaWorks services are on-demand applications developed by various teams throughout IBM Research. The services are prototypes of emerging technologies and concepts available as online applications through any Web browser. Services are provided at no charge. After a recent update to my debian sid system (2.16.1 kernel, kde 3.5.4) samba no longer works. When I try to access my home network using konqueror I get a "timeout on server" message. When I try to restart samba I get this:
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling samba, but no joy. I'd be grateful for any suggestions. Tim Why Bush Will Nuke Iran By Paul Craig Roberts 09/26/06 "Information Clearing House" -- -- The neoconservative Bush administration will attack Iran with tactical nuclear weapons, because it is the only way the neocons believe they can rescue their goal of US (and Israeli) hegemony in the Middle East. The US has lost the war in Iraq and in Afghanistan. Generals in both war theaters are stating their need for more troops. But there are no troops to send. Bush has tried to pawn Afghanistan off on NATO, but Europe does not see any point in sacrificing its blood and money for the sake of American hegemony. The NATO troops in Afghanistan are experiencing substantial casualties from a revived Taliban, and European governments are not enthralled over providing cannon fodder for US hegemony. I'm taking the plunge -- I'll soon have a copy of Windows. I just bought a new laptop and it comes -- of course -- pre-installed with WinXP. Right now I'm of the mindset that I'll repartition the machine and keep XP on a small partition at the end of the disk. My question is this: What free software (free as in "no cost" is fine, completely "free" is better) should I install on the machine? Suggestions? Things like OpenOffice, FireFox or the GIMP are no-brainers. I'm more curious about other "essential" Windows programs (particularly anti-virus and anti-spyware). What free software do you consider a "must" to have on a Windows machine? I run Debian Woody (got there with a dist-upgrade from Potato) but with some Sarge packages also installed, by mistake. |
