Installed mozilla-firefox and mozilla-mplayer
Also installed lame, faad, and every package I could find with the word 'codec' in it ;)
including:
* libdvdcss2
* gstreamer0.8-plugins
* ffmpeg
* libmikmod2
* mozplugger
* alsa-base
* alsa-utils
* easytag
* msttcorefonts
* xmms

Totem worked with sound, but mplayer has no sound! Any ideas?

EDIT:
Had to run MPlayer as a standalone and raise the volume bar! (DUH)

I am very new to Linux so bear with me. I installed Linux sarge on my old Compaq Armada 1750. I used a PCMCIA ethernet card and all was well. I wanted to use a wireless card with the PC so I installed Madwifi. Now when I boot I get message that PCMCIA Core failed to load and neither the wireless card or the previously working PCMCIA ehthernet card is working. Can anyone help me fix this?

Thanks.

I've been looking for solution for this, but as yet I have not found one.

I use a laptop, and my documents are kept in a folder called Documents.
I am often connected to a network, where there is a server available on which I can dump my documents (via smb or ssh). I can then access these documents over the internet. It also acts as redundancy,
I also have a USB key which is (just) big enough to fit my documents.

I would like to be able to synchronise each of these three folders. I sometimes update the documents on my USB disk or the file server from other computers, so the synchronisation must copy the updated documents to my hard disk.

I was investigating using rsync to synchronise the documents, but it seems to replace any updated documents with the originals. I also (briefly) tried to drsync, but could not get it to work.

In this article you'll learn about the types of pointer operations that can cause memory corruption and you'll also examine some scenarios that show what to consider while working with dynamic memory allocation. Pointers and memory leaks might seem to be deterrents to some programmers but, once you understand the fundamentals of pointers and associated memory operations, they will be the most powerful tool you posses in C.

Hello,

I have a Debian Sarge running on a Asus Server with 2 hard disks. I configured software RAID1 with the mdadm tool. I use udev to manage the system devices. When I remove a hard disk (in this case /dev/sdb), the system removes it from the RAID array and the udev deletes the /dev devices. My is problem is when I plug the hard disk again. The udev instead of creating again the /dev/sdb, it will create /dev/sdc. The raid array won't recover and I think it's because of the changing of letter of the device.

Any help? Thanks.

I just bought a new monitor and wanted to setup a multi-display with my old CRT. I tried googling for this but either I'm searching for the wrong terms or there's just no up to date info about what I want to do...

I have an NVIDIA GeForce 7300GS which has an S-Video, D-Sub and DVI input, I'm using the D-Sub and DVI inputs and it's working... well pretty crappy (due ot different sizes and refresh rates) on windows but it works. I was wondering how I would go about setting this up on debian?

I've read about Xinerama being the xorg extension that supports this, and it seems that all I need to do is add another monitor section in xorg.conf and it should work?

Please help.

I've installed the debian sarge by debootstrap and did the base-config. Maybe somethings missing. Any help?

Thanks.

On a brand new Debian/KDE install, the default fonts are quite harsh. How can I upgrade to some smoother looking ones?

This took far too long! In a nutshell, I was trying to add the router to my existing network, which didn't work. As initially configured, the router is setup to lie between your modem and your PC, and serve as the gateway to your home network. Since my Debian machine already performs that function, I needed to disable the routing features of the D-link router.

First I had to disable my network because the router's default IP address is 192.168.0.1. So I had to edit /etc/network/interfaces to allow a connection between the Debian machine and the router. This gave me access to the router's web configuration by entering 192.168.0.1 in my browser. Once that was accomplished, the web interface allows you to change the IP address to match an available IP address on the original network and disable the router's dhcp server.

I've just tried to put limewire on my computer as well as gtk-gnutella and neither of them load at all - they dont even come up as a process in system monitor. I was thinking the problem might be something to do with java. I've had a bit of a look around for java stuff but none of the advice is on my level.

There's no message when they dont work they just dont!

I kindof assumed i'd already have java on my computer but im starting to think otherwise.

Dear all,

Don't ask me why I have a dedidacted Debian server running DirectAdmin without knowing much about Debian. Some friends did this for me, but they all got married and have children now .

My dedicated server resides in Germany. The company who runs it, has send me an IP for a backup server, xx.xx.xxx.xxx.
They refuse to tell HOW to backup. I have SSH.

1. What do I type after the prompt to backup the whole server?
2. What do I type after the prompt to restore the whole server?
3. How do I get a copy of my server to the backup server?

Don't expect me to understand anything more then a step by step instruction ;)

Henk

Hey, this is my first shot at any Linux software, so please bare with me. I have a core 2 duo processor (64 bit), so I downloaded the ia64 DVD version through bit torrent. I mounted it to a DVD and rebooted, but it would not take me to a menu. It just kept restarting until I removed the disk. I downloaded the same version again from an http and had the same issue. Finally, I tried the net installation using a minimal CD, but this time it tried to boot from the CD but then froze.

Can someone please help? {:(

I just completed an installation of Debian testing. I am trying to install a Samsung ML-2250 laser printer, but I get this error:

CUPS_BackEnd: get-printers failed: client-error-not-found

Does anyone know what this means? I had no problem installing the printer in Sarge. Thanks for any help you can give.

I recently noticed one of my systems failing to load nfs from the fstab on startup. It was due to the locking system the script uses, creating a /var/run/network/mountnfs. The directory got stuck there not removed by the script. a simple rm /var/run/network/mountnfs -rf fixed it.

When I install Debian, the installer can't find my network card.
I have a Netgear FA-311 that claims to be compatible with linux.
I have tried both Tulip and natsemi as drivers, but both require parameters.
Could somebody give me the parameters or a driver that works without parameters?
*Note* I'm new to linux, so please don't slam me with linux terms.

Gnome not bad rather good!

I have a hard time now in this buggy linux world. KDE diapointed me to the limit there I delibrate to install and try ugly boring Gnome. And I did install Gnome!
My first step was to make it look like my KDE desktop as much as possible, to make me feel at home. And then I tried to test all functions that didn't worked well in KDE. Gnome passed that test. The webbrowser I use now, Galeon, doesn't need 4-5 seconds from the moment then I klick the mouse on my link folders, in the bookmars toolbar, until it shows the bookmarks that reside there. Over all Gnome are much faster than KDE. And Gimp behave as a completely new application. With Evolution I can send html-mail with pictures embedded. After plugging in my digital camera I been aked if I will download the pictures. And I will! All killer applications are made for GTK and Gnome. Open office, Gimp, Gecko based webbrowsers to mention a few.

Hi,

I am trying to download the Hindu sacred text "Rig Veda" from this website http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/rigveda/index.htm. The structure of the directory is simple, the texts parts are stored like this:

http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/rigveda/index.htm (main index)

http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/rigveda/rvi01.htm (book 1)
http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/rigveda/rv01001.htm (hymn 1)
http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/rigveda/rv01002.htm (hymn 2)
etc.

http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/rigveda/rvi02.htm (book 2)
http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/rigveda/rv02001.htm (hymn 1)
http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/rigveda/rv02002.htm (hymn 2)
etc.

It goes on for a total of 10 books.

Alas, at the top of each page there are links to other parts of the website including the home page (http://www.sacred-texts.com/index.htm). So when I use 'wget -r -l 2 http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/rigveda/index.htm' to get everything two levels down from http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/rigveda/index.htm I ALSO get two levels down from the home page and the rest of the links.
