Hello.
I am a newbie and this is my first post... sorry!!!

Ok, I have a 2GB Sandisk Cruzer Micro. The specs say it is Linux compatible, but I really do not know how to get debian to recognize it. (I need to transfer files to it)

any help would be greatly appreciated...

Thank you,

Christina

I just have created additional postfix servers on the mail server and would like to add the additional configs into the init daemon but looking at the scrip from LaMont Jones I am not able to decipher where to put the additional servers. I have an old script which is shorter and does not have a lot of the extra codes as the newest one.

Does anyone have an idea as to add additional postfix servers? I am a bit perplexed.

Thanks,

I think this is a debian package thing, not dspam.

But I have user .pref files and the option to put them into the database.

And they are both there and they both conflict...

How do you I resolve this?
I would prefer to use the database if I could.

Hi all,

I use openswan as a road-warrior. No issues with the connection, all is
good. However, when the VPN is up, I'd like to use a different DNS
server (one across the VPN) than the one that the local DHCP server
provides. I have:

supersede domain-name-servers 192.168.168.10

in dhclient.conf, but this breaks when I'm out and about with no VPN
(such as roaming with a 3G card - but why that doesn't work is a
different matter).

Anyone know of anything that I can investigate to make this work more
seamlessly? In summary, when the VPN is up, I want DHCP to use the
above server. Down, I want it to use whatever DHCP suggests.

Dear Debian folks,

I recently stuck a 13 GB drive in a Gateway 2000 Pentium 133 Mhz ancient PC.

I loaded Sarge 3.1 r3 on it.

This was a slow process and involved a certain amount of farting around in
the installation but in the end it worked.

On a machine like this gnome is a non-starter. It is too slow.

So I bunged icewm on instead and it works OK speed wise.

It feels right.

But I have some ignorances that are spoiling my fun a bit.

One thing is that I can't seem to find any icon for the floppy like there is
in gnome.

What do you do here? Do you open a terminal window put the floppy in and
use the mount command to read it?

What about a CD?

Another problem I have is that Openoffice takes ages to load and I think the
machine is struggling a bit with it.

The Ajax Toolkit Framework (ATF) is a core piece of the new Open Ajax initiative, which aims to increase accessibility to the powerful Web programming technique through the Eclipse Foundation. This article includes a HelloWorld example in which you install and configure the ATF, then use Eclipse and Dojo to create a basic Web application.

I haven't been able to read any CD from my cdrom drive in my computer
running Debian Etch for quite a few weeks. Not sure exactly when this
problem started. Whenever I insert a disc, it doesn't get detected and
if I try to manually mount it, I get the message "no medium found" or
some such thing.

That same disc works in the cd write on the same computer.

I noticed yesterday, that when the computer boots up or when I close the
cdrom's tray, the LED on the cdrom blinks as usual. But when I insert
the disc and close the tray, the LED blinks for a while, then nothing
happens and when I take out the disc the disc appears to have not moved
at all. Looks like the cdrom drive is not spinning it at all.

So, it is the drive broken? Doesn't look like to be an issue with hal or
dbus.

I installed sun-java with apt-get:

sun-java5-bin - 1.5.0-08-1
sun-java5-demo - 1.5.0-08-1
sun-java5-doc - 1.5.0-08-1
sun-java5-fonts - 1.5.0-08-1
sun-java5-jdk - 1.5.0-08-1
sun-java5-jre - 1.5.0-08-1
sun-java5-source - 1.5.0-08-1

Then I dowloaded java_app_platform_sdk-5_01-linux-nojdk.bin and ran it,
but this message appeared:

.

me and friend wrote this small prog but it is still not good enugh (it
is really long)

could you plz take a look and give me some editions ?
The prog need to take a number then test :
find the largest digit.
is the number simatric
show the reverse number

it is released under FAL licence (F*@! all licences)
all right belong to Debian .. :-)

------------------------------------------------------------------------

#include
#include

char get_max_digit(int num);
int get_summ_digits(int num);
char is_symmetric(int num);
int reverse_num(int num);

void menu()
{
printf("\n1. Summ of digits.\n");
printf("2. Max digit.\n");
printf("3. Reverse number.\n");
printf("4. Is symmetric.\n");
printf("5. New number.\n");
printf("6. Exit.\n");
}

I don't know if this is relevant to anybody else besides me, but
nikons d70s works as a usb mass storage device under etch! Mass
storage was broken on sarge, needed ptp stuff.
It makes me rememeber that other thread, 'debian love'...
I'm very glad!
cheers all!

Hello,

I have a new laptop (Dell D620, with etch freshly installed) from my new
job and I am trying to print using CUPS. The situation is the following,
at work there are two different networks: xxx.xxx.10.xxx (let's call it
'internal') and xxx.xxx.20.xxx (let's call it 'external'). The cups
print server is a machine on the internal network and my laptop is
connected on the external network. I am not seeing any printers whereas
when my laptop was on the internal network CUPS could detect
automatically all the available printers. Do you have any idea of what I
am missing?

I tried to add the name of the CUPS server in /etc/cups/client.conf but
then when I go to "Desktop/Administration/Printings" I obtain the
message: "The CUPS server could not be contacted"

Any help would be welcomed,

I use nmh as the user agent for mail and have recently
been asked to send various files to coworkers that contain
attached files full of processed information. I know it can be
done, but I haven't found a linear description of the process.
I recently installed the mhonarch suite to handle MIME messages
better and I know it can build such a message.
It looks like whatnow has an attach command which intuitively
seems like you should just "attach path/file" but I get a rather
cryptic message about a field name that really makes no sense.

Google searches turn up an amazingly small amount of
information and most of that is a string of messages from the
nmh-workers group discussing development issues. Important, but
not what I need.

If there is a good step-by-step description anywhere, I

Preparing to buy a new server...

What is debian's opinion about hardware/software raid?

I have the feeling that software raid 1 is more reliable since if
anything goes wrong with the hardware, I could just take one or two
disks out of the server and put them into a workstation to get up and
running or copy data of the disks for the time until the hardware gets
fixed.

On the other hand, performance will probably be better with a dedicated
hardware raid controller.

What are your experiences?

Thanks,
Johannes

NB: we are talking about ibm server sxeries 226, raid controller sata
raid 5 vs software raid 1 using mdadm.
I would either use 3x250 GB + raid 5 or 4x250 GB + raid 1

I went to reportbug to do this. There were a bunch of bugs previously filed a
while back about segfaults caused by corrupt /var/cache/apt/*.bin. Taking the
clue, I deleted the contents and let it redo them. Voile.

Hi!

I was experimenting with some old computers (Compaq deskpro EN 800MHz)
which has an intel pro100 NIC on the motherboard. My installation
started with old distros like Mandrake 8.1 and RedHat 9. Both distros
hade an old bug which caused the eepro100 module to hang and wrote
"wait_for_cmd_done timeout!" in syslog.

To get around that (hard to find quickfixes to five year old bugs) I
installed Sarge which I use on my computers at work and I know it uses
the e100 module instead of the eepro100 which I nolonger trust.

But after a few minutes of testing (ssh to work, reading mail , normal
network stuff) the xterm completely frooze, just like the old distros!!
When I started a new xterm to see what was going on I found out that the
network had died, without as little as a whisper in the logs, it just

Hello,

I'm lost trying to install a D-Link DGE-550SX additionally to my existing

1) add the appropriate 'dl2k' driver to /etc/modules.

After a reboot dmesg|grep eth delivers this:

Hello,

For a few years I have used dsl in an old pentium 1 machine for a fileserver for my house. Since I recently got hold of a better old machine I thought I would install debian and update the configuration

The fileserver is using samba and should allow a number of clients (Mac, Win and *nix) to mount read and write using the pass/user pair guest/guest (trying to keep it as simple as possible).

I made a guest user on the file server machine :

# adduser guest

and added the samba password

# smbpasswd -a guest

# testparm

# /etc/init.d/samba restart

For some reason the smb.conf that I copied over from the working dsl config does not work, I get an error with each of these connection methods from a  machine on the network :

A quick word of warning.

I was very positively impressed with Mepis 6 , which I used to set up a
machine lacking a net connection (from a cover disk!). In some ways it is
neater than Knoppix. So this is not intended as a criticism of Mepis.

In the past I have migrated more than one sstem from Knoppix to pure
Debian, with no serious glitches. I thought the same was happening with
the Mepis 6 install moving toward etch. Then I removed dhclient3 (in
order to try dhcpc-client -- not important why) Aptitude required one of
the now unused Mepis admin packages to be removed because it was dependent
on dhclient3. While I was there I removed a couple of other Mepis-only
things. Two minutes later ai came back to the computer to an empty
package list on aptitude!. It had cleared /ets/apt/sources.list!

Hello.

after a base install of Debian Etch, I selected all necessary packages
for a LAMP System - Linux Apache MySQL PHP.

Specifically:

apache-perl  1.3.34-4
php5  5.1.6-5
libapache-mod-php5
5.1.6-5
[and related packages]

But I have to manually edit /etc/apache-perl/httpd.conf and enable
"AddType application/x-httpd-php .php" aswell as /etc/apache-perl/modules.conf
to add "LoadModule php5_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/libphp5.so".

Why do the installer scripts not handle that automatically?

That could avoid a lot of noise on support forums of all kind ...

Hi,
A killer app is an application that compels one to use a certain
system. On Debian lists, someone mentioned that meld, a GUI diff
utility, was killer. I can't think of any I have because I moved to
GNU/Linux for its said overall magnificence, instead of a particular
application, and today there's isn't one utility I admire so much I'd
consider such... maybe gnome-terminal, lsof, grep, top,
epiphany-browser, or less. I'd mention admirance for Blender, GCC,
Python but they are cross-platform. I'd mention GNOME, but it's a 100
apps. So I give up and ask you, what's your killer app(s)?

Hi!
I have a problem with aligning display on my PC. I hav currently 3
systems instaled : windows, debian 3.1 and 4.0 recenly came be. I set up
a display under windows by monitor menu becouse under linux it can be
done by software and under windows it can't. Under 3.1 I've generated a
modeline with xvidtue and placed it in XF86Config-4 in the monitor
section. It worked just fine. Under 4.0 on the oter hand it doesn't. I
generate a modeline with xvidtune but when I restart X with a modeline
added to xorg.conf the display is shifted. Modeline it self does
something becouse when I comment it out the shift is different but it
doesn't do as xvidtune shows it should.

Any suggestions?
Regards
Jakub Narojczyk

Yesterday a bunch of updates were available for Mysql and php related stuff, so I upgraded but some problems with mysql started occurring. Aptitude said that it was unable to update due to some errors, but the rest installed fine and it even seems that Mysql upgraded ('mysql --version' gives the up-to-date version). I still keep getting the errors though, and I am unable to update the mysql-server-5.0 package, and due to the problems with that I am unable to install any other packages.
