Hi,

My etch has this squid logrotate script.

********************
#
# Logrotate fragment for squid.
#
/var/log/squid/*.log {
daily
compress
delaycompress
rotate 10
missingok
nocreate
sharedscripts
prerotate
test ! -x /usr/sbin/sarg-maint || /usr/sbin/sarg-maint
endscript
postrotate
test ! -e /var/run/squid.pid || /usr/sbin/squid -k rotate
endscript
}
***********************

but the program sarg-maint did not exist on my server, and the
apt-get install sarg-maint did not worked.

any advice?
thanks a lot.

I reolved annoying bug behavior
of

1. firefox startup looking for http://firefox/
which was redirected by my ISP to an ad company site.

2. firefox ignored home page preference on restart of firefox.

Solution:

replace icon shortcut from

firefox %u

to

firefox http://yourchosenhomepage

thus

firefox http://www.google.com
or
firefox file:///home/userid/home.html

thank you all for help.

An odd situation: When I start Fluxbox (or any other WM) from GDM, I get
to use the font and cursor set by GDM.

If I start fluxbox with 'startx' I am given another font and cursor.

If I knew which font and cursor GDM was using, I would like to have
fluxbox use them, but I don't. And I can't find where GDM's setting is
that tells it which to use. /etc/gdm/gdm.conf doesn't mention much on
fonts or cursors. I've explored /etc/X11 and found nothing. Can anyone
point me in the right direction?

Whenever I boot into the 2.6.18-4-686 kernel everything works fine,
but when it starts loading hald I get:

Buffer I/O error on device sr0

It says this about 8 times. I tried reinstalling hal but that didn't
seem to change anything either.

I'm wondering if this is a serious issue (I still have 2.6.18-3-686
installed and it works perfectly, so I can switch back to using that)
or if I'll have to recompile the kernel from source to fix this or
something.

Thanks for your time.

Your article is indented my responses are not:

Alright, I’m going to say this. I think Microsoft should acquire
Linux.

They already *CAN* acquire a Linux distro and improve/redistribtue it
for NOTHING. They only have to abide by the License measures. The GPL is
what they keep saying is keeping them from doing it.

Now, I understand that Linux is not as independent of an OS as
Windows;

Linux is an OS Kernel. Much the same as Windows has the Win32 Kernel.
But not in as much as the OS and GUI and other applications are tied

Dear Debian Guys

I've tried to install Debian GNU/Linux 3.1r5 with install

Dear All:

My platform is Debian etch with gnome as desktop environment.
I can mount samba shared folder manually , but I don't know why I can
not browse samba network by using Location/Computer/Network.

Did I miss some necessary packages ?

Hi all,

I want to mount a Windows share using CIFS and an entry in my fstab like so:
//server/share /media/mnt cifs rw,user,noauto,workgroup=one,username=two

This works only if I set the set user ID for /sbin/mount.cifs:
# ll /sbin/mount.cifs
-rwsr-xr-x 1 root root 16960 Feb 1 07:00 /sbin/mount.cifs

If the set user bit is not set, I get:
$ mount /media/mnt
Password:
mount error 1 = Operation not permitted
Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g.man mount.cifs)

I have to set this bit manually and there is some process that unsets
this bit about every month, that I have not been able to find. I'm sure
that process is in place for a good reason.

I have two questions:
1) What is the process that unsets the set user ID bit on
/sbin/mount.cifs, and;

Hi list,

I just installed mt-daapd server to share my music collection over the
network. It is perfectly seen by my iBook (iTunes). However, I want to
be able also to see this collection with Amarok on my other Debian
machine. The daapd server is correctly seen from that machine, when
using avahi-discover (I add a service /etc/avahi/services). I followed
the instructions given here: http://amarok.kde.org/wiki/Music_Sharing
Everithing goes well until Point 9). At 10), I see no labelled folder
corresponding to the mt-daapd server name. I can click on the button
to add a computer. If I enter the IP of the server, everything is fine
and I can play the music. However, I would have expected that at least
entering the computer.local name broadcasted by avahi would have been

Hi,

I can not ping a remote host successfully unless I have "tcpdump -i
eth0" running, in which case, my network access works fine.

I am running Debian etch on a Dell Inspiron e1505 laptop. The eth0
address is static on my local LAN. Once tcpdump is running, the
laptop can access the network with no problems.

Any help or suggestions to solving this concern is really appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi all

My wife has run into a problem using iceweasel to access a site like
123greetings.com - none of the cards are playing a sound. She is using
KDE. When she's tried using konqueror it simply borks and displays a
dialog box asking whether she wants to use gxine to load the swf file.
Clicking cancel crashes konqueror.

It is likely to be local to this site, but just wanted to check in with
anyone else's experiences or ideas on this.

Cheers

Where does Kmail locate its mail directories? It is evidently in a

it depends on how well written your code is :-)

also, i haven't worked extensively with NFS for several years now, but
it has ALWAYS had a terrible reputation for locking issues. there are
particular ways of doing NFS-safe locking (see, for example the way that

Dear all

I noted with interest that Etch seems to automatically include SE Linux
as part of the packages, and I was wanting a bit of a steer about how I,
as a user on a small home LAN, can exploit the strength of SE Linux.
There isn't anything for selinux in man or info, and this is how it is
currently set up according to /etc/selinux/config:

# This file controls the state of SELinux on the system.
# SELINUX= can take one of these three values:
# enforcing - SELinux security policy is enforced.
# permissive - SELinux prints warnings instead of enforcing.
# disabled - No SELinux policy is loaded.
SELINUX=permissive
# SELINUXTYPE= can take one of these two values:
# refpolicy-targeted - Only targeted network daemons are protected.

Hi,

My boss gave me a Dell Latitude D810 to use for work so I didn't have to
use my privately owned Acer Ferrari 4000 anymore. First thing I did was
install testing on it, which was no problem at all. Next I built a
2.6.20.1 kernel (vanilla from kernel.org) and now I have a bit of a
strange problem: after I make a selection in the grub menu I see about 2
lines printed to the console (they flash by too fast to read, but they
do not seem to be error messages). After that the screen stays dark
until kdm starts. Everything else is working like a charm. After logging
in to X I tried to change to a virtual console and noticed text mode
won't work there either. Does anyone have an idea what I could do to get
the text console back? I use it regularly. I tried using the vga=xxx

Roberto Sanchez & others,

At Thu, 25 Jan 2007 12:45:38 -050, Roberto Sanchez said,
"Setup mutt on the machine and ssh in when
you are travelling."

It works as you outline.
POP3 server, is on machine P.
fetchmail, exim, mutt and ssh are on home machine, H.
ssh is on mobile machine M.

Also, thanks for explaining why the MAC
address can not not identify H to the world.

I wonder about streamlining even further.
Ie., run exim and mutt, or other MUA, on M
with M-exim communicating with H-exim by SMTP
tunnelled in TLS. A message would travel
thusly.

SMTP
POP3 in TLS
P =====> H ======> M-exim ===> M-MUA

Any chance of this working? Any tips on
configuring it before I waste too many
hours ... or days?

Thanks, ... Peter E.

Got 2.6.20 running, connected. fine.

Did this on advice of posters here:
1. Delete network (netfilter, iptables stuff) from .config.
2. Do make, answer questions.
3. I realized I still had no conntrack stuff so ran make menuconfig and
selected these module.
4. Compiled.

It boots up fine. Ip_conntrack-ftp is not used, apparently, and the main
conntrack stuff is running instead.

Rebuilt the nvidia graphics driver, realtime-lsm, kqemu. Just fine.
Squashfs and Unionfs will not compile but this seems to happend with each new
kernel version so wait. Not using at present anyway. Have them on 2.6.18 in
any event.

On a recent standard etch install ctrl-alt-F1 does not seem to be working.
Has something else been changed in the login-manager to prevent this (similar
to the kdmtheme problem)? I've googled, but haven't really found anything.

This is the usual age old problem of getting nvidia
driver to work. My box (unstable) was running smoothly
until I upgraded to KDE 3.5.6 using 'aptitude -t
experimental'. In which process, I guess, the kernel
also got upgraded from 2.6.18-3-486 to 2.6.18-4-486 a
few days ago. At that time there was no
nvidia-kernel-2.6.18-4-486 in the unstable repository.
So, I tried the 'module-assistant' way:

$ apt-get --purge remove nvidia-glx
$ m-a prepare
$ m-a autoinstall nvidia
$ apt-get install nvidia-glx
$ dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg (and choose nvidia)
$ echo nvidia >> /etc/modules
[--- reboot --]

It did not work. So, I shifted back to "nv" driver and
waited for a while. Yesterday I checked that
nvidia-kernel-2.6.18-4-486 was added to the unstable

Sudoku quietly appeared on the scene in the United States in the last couple of years, and then became a phenomenon, just as it had in Japan. Someone you know most likely has played it, if not yourself. Because Sudoku is based on very specific data patterns, you can use XPath expressions to evaluate the progress the user has made in a specific game. You can also use these patterns to easily use Mozilla Firefox XForms extensions to generate a game board that enables the user to play.

Dear all,

As some of you might remember, some of the debian users on this list
discussed a few weeks ago about the creation of documentation aimed at
computer novices. One first step into this direction was the
registration of a project with alioth (which we called novice-doc).
Unfortunately the project was denied because I, as the submitter, am
not a Debian developer. It was suggested by the alioth admins that with
a Debian developer sponsoring the project we could get the approval
before creating a package of our docs.

If there is a Debian developer interested in sponsoring this project we
would appreciate the support.

I would like to point out that this project is not meant to replace or
compete with other docs (like the Debian Reference), but to provide
