I noticed a lot of people on this mailing list have GPG enabled in
their emails, and now that I've seen it enough I'm wondering a few
things;
What exactly does GPG/GnuPG do?
What are the advantages to having it?
How do I set it up to recognize other people's signatures?
How do I set it up with my own signature, that works with Mutt?

Texas Classrooms are the bridge between vast potential and the realization of that potential. Educators in Texas high schools can be proud of the progress they have made since 1994. During the era of the TAAS test, passing rates rose by 32 points from 53 percent to 85 percent. Texas schools have benefited from more than $6 billion in additional state funding; a renewed focus on the teaching of core subjects like reading, math and science; and a system of accountability that identifies pockets of failure and provides strong incentives for improvement.
Hello,
I have made an audio CD from some music we recorded. The tracks
information contains some unicode text. Vorbiscomment and metaflac
commands display the track's information of ogg and flac files correctly
in konsole (so the locale settings are correct and necessary fonts are
installed). However, after burning the audio CD, the following command
shows question marks instead of non-English characters (but English text
is shown properly):
$> cdda2wav -JH dev=/dev/hdd
This is the same session of konsole in which vorbiscomment and metaflac
commands output the characters properly. Does cdda2wav not support utf-8
or unicode characters? Or am I missing something?
As far as I now, my locale is also set properly:
$> set | grep LANG
LANG=en_CA.UTF-8
In an effort to not sound like a newbie when speaking verbally about
Linux-related terms, I would like to know how to properly pronounce
these words. I've been training a co-worker on server management and
have run into quite a few terms for which I didn't quite know the
proper pronunciation.
Also I think I know the correct way to say some of these but I really
want to make sure, so I'll put those in the list too.

Hello all
This is a real newbie question and I am now out of my depth.
I have built a system out of my scrap box to experiment with Debian
(netinst from testing) using a RIVA TNT2 video card(nv drivers) and
Panasync 5G crt.
Using the gui for screen resolution I attempted to change between the
offerings ie 1024 x 768 @ 61hz,(would have expected 60hz here)800 x 600
and 640 x 480, no other refresh rates available. If I attempt to change
from 1024 x 768 the screen blanks and returns me to the log in screen.
I have found reference to the video card in the /var/log/x.org log and a
lot of permutations for display settings which don't seem to correlate
with the crt,s spec of H 30-64 V 50-160.
Any help in trying to resolve this problem would be welcome.
I have recently installed Debian Etch r2 on a box with 5x250GB SATA drives. I've raided those drives in a raid5 configuration, then made a logical volume group and formated the group using ext3. I've noticed that once I tried to stream data (music and movies primarily) off of the box (through AFP/netatalk), that the data stream is choppy. Once every 10 seconds or so, it 'hiccups' and the stream is paused, or extremely slow, for about 1-2 seconds. The box seems to write data just fine, as I've tested by copying over 300 gigs at a sustained rate of 10 MB/s.

Hi all,
I'm using a simple script for making backups with tar. I can't make tar quiet, so cron keeps mailing me 'Removing leading `/' from member names' . Adding > /dev/null doesn't help.
Most recently, how much of the heavy traffic on this list has had anything to
do with Debian? With Linux? With computers?
The price of bread, love or hate Wallmart or Sponge-Bob, Ubuntu or Dell (ok U
is a Linux distro and Dell makes computers, but...) Endless threads filling
my mailbox with irrelevance.
Its fun to touch these things a bit but I think there are limits :-)

Here’s a new way to find what you're looking for - Yahoo! Answers
I know there is a way to do it, but I haven't found the right
piece of doc yet I guess.
How do I get /etc/profile and friends to be run when gnome
starts up a terminal session?
TIA!

Hi Folks,
A while back I came across a pretty neat piece of open source software
providing a database for large scale mail storage, searching, and
retrieval - with interfaces to all the standard MTAs and both POP and
IMAP interfaces to the database.
For the life of me, I can't remember the name, and can't seem to find it
via google.
Does this ring any bells for anyone? Can somebody point me at it?
Thanks very much,
Miles

This short guide describes how you can configure your GNOME desktop so that you can open files and directories with a single mouseclick instead of a double click. This is helpful if you switch from Windows to Linux and used to open files and directories with a single click on your Windows desktop, too.

Hello!
I would like to know if there is a site or a mailing list were i could
read about the updates for Etch that are released on a regular basis.
The info in the update manager is some times insufficient to fully
understand what the updates are addressing and if there is the chance of
running in to troubles installing a particular update.
Thank you for your time.

Hi, I've downloaded the etch release for some time, and there is a bug in the last release that was not solved yet! I don't know the package cause it come with the mimimal instalation, actualy I'dont even know if it is on a package. The bug: You install a etch system with abnt2 (brazillian) keyboard layout, and when the instalation finishes if you press Caps Lock and type some key the output is like this: cccccDDDDFFGHHHeeeeeerrrrrrTTTTT But ALL the letter were typed with the caps on! this bug was in amd64 and i386 release for a long time!!! Thank and sorry if it hard to understand what I'm saying..
Hi all,
I have upgraded recently to kernel 2.6.20.4 from 2.6.15.7 and now I have
wired behaviour with the screen and acpi stuff. First of all suspend my
laptop (Thinkpad T30) crashes usually after suspending for the second
time. Second my display light goes into saving mode whenever I log in
and whenever I watch a movie with whatever program. I reinstalled and
deinstalled acpi packages but the display-shading continues. No problem
with the kernel 2.6.15.7.
Does someone have similar problems? Any suggestions and hints?
Thanks in advance,
Erik

Hello,
on three different computers, all Etch 2.6.18-3-k7, KDE 3.5, Kaffeine 0.83
DVDs recorded from TV with a normal DVD-recorder can be played correctly.
But some commercial DVDs can only be played on one of them.

I'm setting up SSH to replace telnet for use on my LAN. I've gotten
basic functionality working but I'm struggling with ssh-agent and
ssh-add. Where should I put them? Or have invocation of them already
been planted in boot-up scripts somewhere awaiting my flipping a few
config switches?
I'm running Etch with tasksel configured desktop environment. My
style of working doesn't use GUI much, but I have _many_
gnome-terminal windows open, and I want ssh links to several computers
on my screen. From reading a few advise web sites I get the impression
that I could reduce typing of passphrase by using ssh-agent and
ssh-add, but I can't figure out how.
And then it might be that these programs actually serve an entirely
different purpose than I believe.
Advice?

A couple weeks ago I had a problem while using slrn, with an error
wriitng to file after I tried to exit. The input/output error messages
I got suggested a hard drive problem, but that came to nothing. The
whole thing was discussed in another thread here.
A few days ago I tried to start slrn with a different news-server (one
which I hadn't yet created a .jnewsrc file for, my mistake). This
immediately froze the whole system - no cursor movement, no keyboard
shortcuts, no access to a text terminal with C-A-F1. I had to power
off to get control back. Unfortunately, I've been working round the
clock in the lab, and didn't have time to immediatley sniff around for
clues or call for help.
I properly created the .jnewsrc file, and I haven't had a problem

I'm trying to download the DVD installer images for AMD64 via jigdo
using the templates available at
cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/etch_di_rc2/amd64/jigdo-cd/
However I've found that the .jigdo files reference a number of .deb
packages which are no longer available in any Debian mirror (because
they have been superseded by packages with higher version numbers). Is
there any way for me to update the partial image created by jigdo to
the actual ISO image I can burn to DVD?
(A net install is out of the question because of my unpredictable DSL
connection. I really need to have the .deb files on a readily
accessible medium before I begin my installation.)

Dell is the only computer I've had the pleasure to break down for reuse
and recycling that has its hard drive close to the bottom of the front
panel screwed onto that panel from the outside with the cabling into the
drive inserted into the drive from below the bottom edge of the drive. You
don't want to reboot a dell with your foot because doing so too often
really will kill the hard drive. Other systems that have hard drives in
them have them lying parallel with the floor and the connections are
toward the front of the computers.
