I cannot seem to get the audio to work. If I run alsaconf, everything seems to be set up fine, but still no sound. I noticed this message in /var/log/messages:

I'm trying to rebuild my system with a pair of 120 GB drives and a 160GB drives. In the partitioner, I configured the drives with
hda1 1.5GB encrypted swap
hda2 500MB /boot
hda3 500MB encrypted /keys (for key files for the other encrypted partitions)
hda4 119GB encrypted pv
hdc1 120GB encrypted pv
hdd1 160GB encrypted pv
I am using a single volume group and multiple logical volumes. After the encrypted partitions were filled with random data, I added my passphrases for all of the partitions, went back into the partitioner and built the LVM config, created my VG, added the PVs and created all my LVs. Finished the install and rebooted.
When the system came up, I get the following:
hda information
hdc information
hdd information

Yeah, prepare for that drive to completely melt down soon, so you aren't
taken by surprise if it actually does.

I need to downgrade from Etch back to Sarge. The only resource I have is the original Sarge install CD. How can I use this CD to reinstall Sarge (over Etch) without using any data?
My intuition tells me all I need to do is skip the partition phase of the install, and things should be okay; however to do so requires that a root filesystem must be mounted. Is there a boot option I can pass to the installer to tell it to mount my already existing system? Thanks in advance.
Hate to be a bother but I've exhausted my resources of the moment and need some direction, Getting Blender (2.42a-7) up and running under ETCH. This will be usimg GNU-LINUX 4.0/NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500 installed with 2.6.18-484 kernel on a Pentium 4.
I had a previous installation under sarge which was an APT installed, 2.3 version, which was functioning properly but my upgrade to ETCH took care of that! It was it turns out, entirely my fault except for an installer option concerning a software frame buffer which allowed me to make the install after it was declined.

Hi Users
I have a running debian "testing" with guessnet and wpa_supplicant. Now,
my question is:
I have 2 Accesspoints near my Computer. One net is encrypted with
wpa-psk and one is open.
I want, if the encrypted net is accessible, then this should be my
choises. Else, try the open net.
I tried a lot of options and ideas, but no-one seems to help. My system
choose allways the open one, regardless the priority...
But, if I comment out the open one, then, the encrypted is there. This
seems to work, but the false priority.
Thanks for any help and idea...
Raphael
here is my wpa_supplicant.conf:
# raphael:home_wifi
network={
ssid="encrypted_net"
priority=5
scan_ssid=1
id_str="home_wifi"
proto=WPA
Hi all
Can you please advise on the following error KMail kicked up.
I am running an Etch machine with KDE. Today I went to spell check an
e-mail and was presented, for the first time, with an error message that
aspell/ispell was not in my path. I haven't had this error before, and
checking KMail's settings, Ispell is the default dictionary ... so I
don't understand how this is in error for no apparent reason.
Can someone point me in the right direction of this please because this
information is clearly contradictory.
Thanks

Hello,
I'm running the following mailserver setup:
I'm running a Debian woody server at home with postfix, which relays all
mail over to my external Debian sarge root server, running qmail. Now I
want to use smtp auth and tls.
This is how my qmail server answers to telnet localhost 25

250-rom.iunius.org
250-STARTTLS
250-AUTH LOGIN CRAM-MD5 PLAIN
250-AUTH=LOGIN CRAM-MD5 PLAIN
250-PIPELINING
250 8BITMIME
But this is how the postfix server at home opens the tls connection to
my qmail server.
Apr 30 16:30:07 santa postfix/smtp[17645]: TLS connection established to
iunius.org: TLSv1 with cipher EDH-RSA-DES-CBC3-SHA (168/168 bits)
The result is that I can not relay, because i'm not authenticated:
Hello, apparently the wxWidget packages from debian are compiled only for work with Unicode versions, I really don't agree with this because I have a lot of code wrote that doesn't work with Unicode.
But the are another problem, I can show the problem with the "db" example from the debian package wx2.6-examples. If you go inside the directory "/usr/share/doc/wx2.6-examples/examples/samples/db" and try compile it you get the next errors:
db : make

We're not ignoring you Marcelo. I picked up a webcam from the Aldi , a Lifetec
LT9388, which is omnivision, using the ov511 driver. It's not fantastic, but
acceptable, and they had reduced the price from 25€ to 5€. I bought one on
the off chance it might work, and it was ok, and as they had some more at the
Hi. I was looking for a notebook I found two good deals: Toshiba Satellite
A135-S4527 and Sony VAIO N220E/B, both for the same price (after rebate)
$599.99.
I wonder which one would have better Linux compatibility (and maybe better
performance).
Their specifications are listed below.

The 'official' Xfce text editor is mousepad, which has standard search
and replace functionality (Menu -> Search -> Replace - default hotkey
is ctrl-h).
Not sure if this is the right list to ask this on, too many to choose
from and none of the others looked like what I wanted. Anyway; here's
the deal, I'm running a TinyMUSH world on my system. The problem that
I'm having is that when a player is idle for any length of time they
get disconnected with a "Network error: POSIX error: Operation timed
out" as far as I can tell, this shouldn't be happening. Neither my ISP
nor the MUSH software is disconnecting them. In fact the MUSH has an
idle timeout in it to d/c players that have been idle for too long,
this isn't activating however.
Anyone have any ideas on how I can stop this?
Have installed Etch from the KDE CD
High praise for the developers.
Have struck a problem in that Zope, either 2.9 or 3 does not start by default.
It should, and previous releases of Debian do, by default, start zope on boot
up.
On using KSysV KSysV-Init Editor I get the response on trying to start either
"No instances found".
Can anyone help on this matter.

I am having terrible issues trying to install Etch on my server using this SCSI RAID controller. The controller is detected and megaraid_mbox and megaraid_mm are loaded, but GRUB fails to install and LILO installs, but does a repeated EOF message on reboot. I have tried manually removing the modules for megaraid_mbox and megaraid_mm and instead loading the legacy megaraid, but the controller is not detected in that case. Althought partitioning, etc. appear to work under the newer megaraid_mbox module, it seems there is some sort of problem with my controller. This hardware setup functioned with no issues under a
I recently install etch from the xfce cd1 in a compaq 1692 (1999 laptop), it install me a working xfce desktop, all work ok and fast but the battery plugin doesnt work, it indicate 0% all the time. I have installed in other partition xubuntu 7.04 and on it work ok (in dapper and edgy yet) but xubuntu is so slowly that i wana to try with Debian etch, and it is actually faster than ubuntu but the battery problem is very important to me because i use the laptop unplug all the time and as hibernate dont work i need to know the battery state to plugit or to shutdown.
If somebody can help me i will be very thankfull.

I was wondering if anyone has had any success at setting up a Dell 1815
Laser Printer? I did a quick search of the archives and could not come
up with anything and I wasn't able to locate any drivers by doing a
google search. Is there a generic driver that I could attempt to use?
Any other suggestions?
Thanks,
