Dear all,
I am using a x86_64 hardware, but I installed a 686 sid on it. Now I
want to use x86_64 sid.
I installed x86_64 linux image, and booted, but all my softwares are
still 686, so new x86_64 software can not be installed.
How to upgrade all my softwares?
Thanks.

Hi
Since I've upgraded my server to Debian Etch and 2.6 kernel I've been trying to solve the following problem. I would be grateful if someone has any ideas what could be causing this (or perhaps suggest a better place to ask for help):
As soon as uhci-hcd module is loaded (usually by udev early during boot, but also if I load it by hand with modprobe) the monitor goes blank. Everything else keeps running as usual (I can log into the machine through ssh for example).
I am installing two servers, each with 16GB of RAM, two quad-core Xeon
processors, and a SATA hard drive. The machines will be compute
servers, meaning lots of concurrently logged in users, each running
an assortment of jobs, and various long-running processes. The jobs
will be
vastly dissimilar with regards to using the memory, disk, and CPU, and
to
their run time, so the configuration should be generic, general
purpose.
What are the current best practices with regards to swap partitions?
Is it
better to create one big, or several smaller swap partitions? Is the
rule
of thumb still RAM*2 for the total size?
We are running Debian 4.0/Etch with the stock -i686-bigmem kernel.
Any input or pointers will be highly appreciated!

Further to my problem of not being able to automatically mount my
windows xp partition and cd to it as a regular user.
from dmesg:
NTFS driver 2.1.27 [Flags: R/W MODULE].
NTFS volume version 3.1.
NTFS-fs warning (device sda1): load_system_files(): Unsupported volume
flags 0x4000 encountered.
NTFS-fs warning (device sda1): load_system_files(): Volume has
unsupported flags set. Will not be able to remount read-write. Run
chkdsk and mount in Windows.
I'm not clear on what I need to do. I don't seem to have chkdsk. I
tried apt-get install chkdsk but that failed because it could not find
the package. "mount in Windows" I don't understand. When I boot into
Windows the partition is there, obviously. Forgive me if I'm a bit of a
daft newbie.

I've managed to resolve most of my problems on my own, but Udev has beaten me.
Sarge is not a problem, as it's using the 2.4.27, or 2.6.8 kernel, and Udev is
not in the equation. Etch has a 2.6.8, and a 2.6.17 kernel, and Lenny has a
2.6.11, and a 2.6.17 kernel. The problem is with the 2.6.17 kernel that uses
Udev.
My TV card was set as /dev/video0, and some time later the webcam was set
as /dev/video1. this works fine with the pre 2.6.17 kernels (no Udev), and
the TV card consistently is /dev/video0, and the webcam /dev/video1. Booting
with the 2.6.17 kernel is a different scenario. Very hit and miss. Sometimes
I boot up and starting Xawtv, I get the TV /dev/video0. Othertimes I bootup
and start Xawtv, and get my webcam /dev/video1.
Hello *,
I have a very well working ThinkPad 570 (P2/366) with on 64MByte and one
128 MByte Module. I like to know, which is the maximum size for the SO
DIMM's since I like to add TWO 256 MByte modules.
Does anyone know, whether this is possibel?
I have a Workststion using a P2/350 and while increased the memory from
3 x 64 MBytes to 4 x 128 MBytes the speed increased nearly by twice.
Thanks, Greetings and nice Day

I am testing mindi and mondo, but after installing mindi, install mdadm too,
and asked me some question referred to raid (I think so), well I answered
either no or none to questions, and after reboot, it seems that kernel search
for raids, but I have one single disk, and it stops searching for a root
filesystem or something so...
These are the output:
dpkg-reconfigure mdadm

Hi,
Anyone know about problems with /etc/security/access.conf and
SSH in Etch?
I'm trying to block ldap users to access my servers, but
everything that I made don't block user to loggin.
If I use this to /etc/pam.d/login and /etc/pam.d/gdm, the
user can't loggin.

Hi,
My Print Screen key is too close to BackSpace, so I keep pressing it
by accident. I use KDE, and this makes "KSnapshoyt" pop up. (In
fluxbox, it sends the content of the terminal to the printer.)
I checked the key assignments of KDE, and I found no shortcut for the
PrtSc key, and even defining a different application for that key
would still make (only) KSnapshot pop up. (KSnapshot was assigned to
Crtl+PrtSc, and I disabled it too, just in case.)
My Google searchs did not help (even on this list).
So, I decided to disable the key.
Using "xev", I saw that the keycode was 111:
....
KeyRelease event, serial 31, synthetic NO, window 0x3600001,
root 0x91, subw 0x0, time 482199882, (485,527), root:(489,552),
Hi,
As already discussed on IRC, we plan to update tzdata in Etch using a
new upstream database. This will be done in two steps:
- upload to volatile to have an update now for those who use volatile ;
- upload to stable to have an update for Etch r2.
Please find below the corresponding changelog. Is it still ok to upload
this package?
Thanks,
Aurelien
tzdata (2007f-1etch1) stable; urgency=low
* New upstream release for Etch:
- Only the timezone definitions have been changed, all scripts are
left unchanged.
- Includes new DST rules for New Zealand (closes: bug#433869).

Try resetting environment variable GNU_LIBPTHREAD_VERSION export GNU_LIBPTHREAD_VERSION=""
Then check for thread version again. getconf GNU_LIBPTHREAD_VERSION
e.g. getconf GNU_LIBPTHREAD_VERSION
NPTL 0.61
If this tells you the version of threads is NTPL then this will solve your problem.

I have two Linux installations in my hard drive, and I want to modify
Linux-2 from Linux-1, using Chroot. Basically "dpkg-reconfigure" and similar
stuff. How do I tell DPKG of Linux-2 to not disturb the daemons that are
running in Linux-1?

Hi Debian users,
It seems that some uninstallers didn't remove their info
pages correctly. For example, I have the entries
* Emacs: (emacs-20/emacs). [ . . . ]
* Emacs: (emacs-21/emacs). [ . . . ]
both of which give error such as
Info file emacs-21/emacs does not exist
(Indeed they don't exist because I removed
emacs21-common-non-dfsg and so on.)
So, my question is how one can clean this up.
Thanks,
Ryo

Thanks for helping me. I installed both of those, and it got past requesting libc! Now, it's requesting the kernel source, which i can't seem to find the appropriate version of.
Here's the log file from the nVidia installer. It might be easier to understand my problem if you see this.
I've already installed the libc package from debian.org, and it worked fine. So no problem there. But the installer isn't picking it up?
nvidia-installer log file '/var/log/nvidia-installer.log' creation time: Mon Jul 30 18:50:20 2007
option status: license pre-accepted : false update : false
force update : false
Thanks for responding to my questions. xorg.conf was pointing to my other card.
I'm having trouble installing the driver for my nVidia card.
I have to exit and close X, then open this shell script to install it.
When I get there, I'm told that there's a problem with something in my kernal, and it must recompile a kernal interface.
That's where it tells my that I must install libc.
I downloaded that, and when I try to run the configure file, it says that "/lib/cpp failed sanity check".
Would anyone like to take a crack at solving this problem?
I'd appreciate it.
Again, I can't stress how thankful I am to those who responded before.

Hi,
Has anyone been able to use frets on fire under Debian Testing?
I'm getting a red screen on startup, with sound effects, but no visible
interface. The same problem as this bug: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=433997
Anyone got it working?
Anyone know if its possible to run it in an etch chroot? Is there any
way to get an app running in a chroot to take advantage of hardware
acceleration of OpenGL?
Thanks,

I've got a 40GB drive and the first 20GB contains Windoze XP. I can
mount this manually fine. I can mount it automatically too. But if I
try to access it as non-root I get:
$ cd /windoze
bash: cd: /windoze: Permission denied
Permissions on my /windoze directory are:
dr-x------ 1 root root 8192 2007-07-29 17:49 windoze
If I umount /windoze and change the permissions they seem to revert back
to the above after I reboot. Accessing it as root works fine, but I
would like to access it as a regular user. Aside: I read in some tux
documentation that for Windows 2000 and Windows XP you can change the
type to vfat and get read/write access to the partition. This would be
great but I am sceptical that it is dangerous to mount rw under ntfs
type but okay under vfat.
