Hi
I have a machine with 3 sata drives. Currently i have
raid 1 /
raid 1 /boot
raid 5 - pv
I have been looking at why not to raid 5 and I would go to raid 10 but I can
only put 3 drives in my machine.
Currently have 3x250G and am looking at getting 3x500G, if I go to mdadm raid1,
then I have 500G safe 500G unsafe which is not really what I want.
I am going to stick with the /, /boot raid1 sets.
But I was thinking about setting up the rest of the space as pv's and them
using lvm's dm-mirror to manage the mirroring of space ? then if I don't want
any redundancy on my space I can lvcreate without dm-mirror.
Any one doing this, I haven't had much experience with dm-mirror.
my thoughts were

Does anyone know how I can figure out if native hinting for truetype
fonts is enabled?
I've been running etch for a couple months now and I understand that
this is the way to go with quality fonts such as Microsoft Verdana.
That's the screen font I use wherever I can and it does not render quite
as well on debian etch as on a Windows machine.
Is there a way I can find out?
And if it it turns out it is not enabled, is there a document anywhere
that explains how I could enable it on a debian system?
Thank you!

I have heard from a user on irc #debian that I can use modules to get the
ipw3945 wireless card working. I downloaded
ipw3945-modules-2.6.22-1-686_2.6.2 2+1.2.1-1_i386.deb and installed it using
kpackage.
The log from kpackage shows that it installed:

I'm running Etch on a Lenovo T60. Up to now, I haven't had a
problem suspending my computer, by shutting the lid or
clicking the "suspend" option on the Gnome Power Manager. This
morning, I tried to do this and it didn't work; it locked the
screensaver, but did not suspend. When I re-entered my
password, there was a message from Gnome Power Manager saying
that there was a suspend problem, and pointing to a link for
more info.
The link, to
http://www.gnome.org/projects/gnome-power-manager/faq.html , was
unhelpful; it suggested that either the hardware is
unsupported (clearly not true, as it's been working up to
now), or that I need to file a bug report, though the link to
this didn't work.
The only relevant line in my syslog seems to be:

I use Opera for just browsing on windows... One thing that annoys me
is that if you come across a .torrent file on the net, using opera, it
doesn't give you a option to just download the .torrent file or even
better open with another application. I always had to start the
torrent download thru opera then stop it, go hunt the .torrent file
and then open it with another application (say utorrent).
I'm trying to install some software that is able to add secondary IP addresses
to the computer.
I've alway used to useing ip aliases, with ifconfig, for example.: eth0:1
The docs I'm reading recommend using "secondary ips" instead of aliases. It
says that IP Aliases are deprecated in favor of "secondary ips", for example:
ip addr add / broadcast dev eth0
My base minimal net install of Etch for not have the "ip" binary at all. A
search in Debian packages shows that it belongs to "iproute".
iproute is (obviously) not a default package, and it's last changelog was in
2006.
Is iproute considered obsolete now, also?
Or is it just that so few people use it it's not part of the base system?

After 10 years of FreeBSD fun, i started out with Debian because of the
excellent HP software support on it and Xen support which FreeBSD lacks
bigtime.
I'm pretty happy with the result, but i'm getting really frustrated by
my Xen installation.
In the domU i am going to run an OpenFiler image, which is bound to
i386-nonPAE-smp-xenU
The i386 part is no problem, but non-PAE means disabling high-memory
support in a custom kernel as there aren't any non-PAE kernels anymore
in Debian Etch.
Using apt-get to install a xen image and hypervisor won't work, so i
tried compiling my own kernel. After a lot of hard work (i'm used to
FreeBSD), i managed to compile my kernel but it's rather flaky.
Can someone precisely tell me what steps i need to take for compiling a
Hi,
My aptitude (uptodate Sid) has been behaving rather strangely lately. When doing updates, it seems to always hang for long periods of time while displaying the line:
99% [5 Packages 4308]
or similar. No processor, network or HDD usage seems to be occurring.
It subsequently generally finishes okay, although I'm not sure it is
always completing the update successfully (all packages I have manually
checked against p.d.o seem to be at the latest version, but I haven't
been very systematic about it). It also seems to be overall more
sluggish and erratic. I know this is very vague and unhelpful, but I
was just wondering if anyone has been seeing anything like this. I've
tried playing with sources.list, but I get similar results no matter
While updating Sarge, aptitude 0.2.15.9 produced this error message:

But it does not recover: xlibmesa-gl-dev shows with flags Bu.
It does not seem to be a download error as:

"NMI received, likely on the PCI bus ..." together with stuff about a
hardware problem.
In the last couple of days I've received this worrying message during
re-awakening from suspend to disk. It doesn't seem to happen in ordinary
booting. I googled for similar messages and found a few but no very
clear resolution, although there are some suggestions it could be a
kernel bug.
I ran memtest86 for 22 hours without errors. I also twice compiled a
kernel, again without errors.
I'm using a Thinkpad Z61M with Sid, kernel 2.6.20.1-slh-smp-2.
Question: is this a false alarm? If not, what tests to do? The machine
is still under warranty but I don't know what fault I could report.

During the recent mythtv and Debian Etch re-install from scratch for the nth time, the system returns a message saying that ivtv-module-2.6.18-4-686 is not found. I had input several mirror sites in the /etc/apt/sources.list but still got the same message.
I worked around this by doing a m-a a-i ivtv after installing the ivtv-source. Thus, the installed version of ivtv-modules-2.6.18-4-686 is now 2.6.18.dfsg.1-12etch2, which is consistent with linux-headers and linux-image.

When I originally posted my problem and said that the
only thing the scripts that refused to run had in common was
that I had put them there, I was very close to the solution. It
wasn't how I set them up or anything, but that I didn't
realize links should be in every single runlevel directory.
When the run level goes up from 0 to 5, one must have
kill or start scripts in each rc directory. I had just put a start
script at rc2.d and a kill script at rc1.d. You must make the
links to kill your process at each run level below where it
starts and the links to start your process at every run level at

I have been trying to find out the exact and proper way to set the host and
domain name on Debian and it's clear as mud. Searching the internet gives all
sorts of conflicting answers.
First, I thought the way to do it was to put the FQDN in /etc/hostname. Then I
ended up with host.domain.domain.tld (maybe I caused that some other way).
I looked at the default in a variety of Debian systems that I've setup using
only thing installer defaults to configure the hostname. Some had only the
hostname in /etc/hosts, some had the FQDN.
I've read the hostname manpage. It says clearly:
"It is not possible to set the FQDN or the DNS domain name with the
dnsdomainname command"
Then it says
"The host name is usually set once at system startup in /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1

I am using Thunderbird's (Icedove) calendar extension, Lightning, on my

Hi guys,
I'm seeing a strange issue. I was busy sorting my music collection,
fixing tags with easytag (1.99.13-0.0 from debian-multimedia), and
adding album art to the files (embedded).
Then, I noticed that Amarok (1.4.4-4) displays garbled image art. I'm
not enitrely sure if Amarok is feeding me rubbish, or is Easytag not
saving the files correctly? Amarok displays the embedded album art from
.m4a files correctly.
Thanks

Hi!
I need to install etch in a notebook which has MS-Vista installed. I
have shrinked the HD (using diskpart from inside Vista) in order to get
room for etch. I am using the etch netinstall cd, and the gui-expert
mode with the following parameters: "acpi=off pnpbios=off noapic
noapm" (I need these parameters in order to boot the Knoppix live CD,
so, I guess the same are need for etch). Everything is going fine until
the stage where the HD is detected: the etch installer doesn't detect
any HD...
The installed HD is a Western Diginal Scorpio HD (WD800BEVS), using the
SATA port 1. I wonder if I need any special module to be loaded during
the installation...
Any help will be very welcome.
Regards

I have a record deck with a USB connection which I last used about 9
months ago. The setup was working then and, as I remember, it was
pretty straightforward to set up. Since that time there have been many
Debian updates and I'm almost certainly using a later kernel.
When I came to use it this time in conjunction with Audacity, which I
was using last time, I can't get a peep out of it although playing
sound files, e.g. midi, does work.
I have tried various inputs without success. The appropriate modules
are loaded including snd_usb_audio.
When the USB lead is plugged in I get this in the logs:
kernel: usb 1-7.1: new full speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address

kernel: usb 1-7.1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

Hi there,
Lately I have a problem with the network card which is going up and down randomly. It's a Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5700 Gigabit Ethernet with the driver tg3.c:v3.77e (June 1, 2007). The network card, the network cable and the network point have been replaced for a new one or plugin in another switch. Also the system has been updated to Debian Etch from Sarge, installed a new kernel (2.6.18-4-686) and the driver has been updated. So I'm getting mad!!!
