hi all,

did anybody ever managed to get bind9 up and running in a vserver setup
on etch?
i tried the suggested source build with:
--disable-linux-caps \
--disable-threads \
also building with --arch i386 on my 64 bit host did not help.

but to no prevail whatsoever, i simply can not get it to start.

my other options would be djbdns but then i seem to get a svscan
problem, and good old bind8 that does works like a charm but has
security concerns to consider as far as i heard.

greetings,

randall

I have a very simple problem to solve: I want only "valid" MAC addresses to come out of my eth0.

The reason is because I use vmware to run some Windows virtual machines. The host computer runs Etch. Each virtual machine have its own MAC addresse for each virtual network adapter. No problem here.

I just want nothing from the virtual machines go throught eth0. But throught tun0 or whatever is okay.

I first tested to just filter the virtual machine's IP with the following rule for netfilter:
iptables --table filter --append OUTPUT --out-interface eth0 --source $BAD_IP --protocol all --jump DROP
But some packets go throught eth0. I think this is because some packets don't have ip address in them (for example, packets to link IP and MAC addresses).

Piracy funds terror attacks
Johnny Depp to blame, apparently
By Nick Farrell: Monday, 31 March 2008, 10:14 AM

THE US Attorney General Michael Mukasey has claimed that counterfeiting and piracy is funding terrorism.

Yep, all those students downloading Coldplay tracks are actually responsible for financing the bad guys who are shooting at our boys in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Mukasey was speaking to Silicon Valley executives at the Tech Museum of Innovation, in defence of the US' bizarre software patent system and copyrights.

He claimed that terror groups are taking their cues from organised crime and increasingly funding their operations from intellectual property theft, he said.

I hope that this is a reasonable place to ask this question. I have a
Lenovo T60 running Debian. I recently upgraded to Lenny and because
that upgrade killed direct rendering under Xorg (I'm using the ATI
drivers as packaged for Debian), I also upgraded to kernel 2.6.24
(using the Debian package linux-image-2.6.24-1-686).

That fixed the X problem, but my wireless setup ceased to work. The
T60 has the Intel 3945 wireless card:

03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection (rev 02)
Subsystem: Intel Corporation Unknown device 1010
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 66
Memory at edf00000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [=4K]
Capabilities: [c8] Power Management version 2

I run Debian Etch on an i386 machine.
today I tried to install Kexi, so that I could look into a file by the format .mdb (MS database). after installation, including all the recommended by-content the synaptic manager offered, I could find Kexi in neither my Applications menu, nor as a right-click option under "open with".
I uninstalled, and re-installed... nothing new...

I just completed an install of Debian GNU/Linux 4.0r3 (ETCH) on my desktop. The installation failed to recognize my linksys WMP54G ver 4.1 wireless card. I tried ndiswrapper with the drivers that came with the wireless card, but it failed and the list of installed drivers shows:

rt61 invalid driver!

So I started researching this problem, but there are so many sources of information and some of them appear to conflict or don't specify which hardware or kernel version they have, others date back to 2002 or earlier. As far as I can tell, the WMP54G ver 4.1 drivers do not work with ndiswrapper, but could not confirm if there was a workaround to this.

Hello,

Now here's a head scratcher...

I have two machines on my local network:

-- Debian Etch with Firefox browser
-- Windows XP with Firefox browser

When I ping my e-mail provider, I get acceptable response from either system (25 ms - 75ms).
But when I connect through the browser, only the Windows system gives me acceptable response.

The Debian system takes five minutes or more to connect to log-in; three minutes or more to bring up mail from log-in, whereas the Windows system gives me acceptable response.

But this laggardly response only happens when I try to connect to my e-mail provider. Any other URL or IP gives me acceptable response.

I've updated Debian Etch; and Firefox on both machines.

I'm trying to install etch r3 in a VMware Server virtual machine.

When I select Desktop environment the install fails during the Select and install software step at about 92% and configure gtk2_engines_spherecrystal.

When I deselect Desktop environment the install fails at the ispell package.

Has anyone successfully installed etch under VMware?

Any suggestions for getting past this error?

Thanks...

Hi Folks--

I just made the switch a few weeks ago from SuSE 10.3 to Etch, as I wanted the rock solid stability that Debian is renowned for.

The transition has been mostly a smooth one and I'm largely happy. However, I have a problem staying connected to the internet.

I'm using a Marvell Yukon ethernet adapter (onboard the Asus A8V Deluxe motherboard). It's in turn connected to a Linksys WRT54G router, which is plugged into a cable internet hookup. My kernel is 2.6.18-6-k7.
