The Perfect Desktop - Mepis 11

falko's picture

This tutorial shows how you can set up a Mepis 11 desktop that is a full-fledged replacement for a Windows desktop, i.e. that has all the software that people need to do the things they do on their Windows desktops. The advantages are clear: you get a secure system without DRM restrictions that works even on old hardware, and the best thing is: all software comes free of charge. Mepis is a Linux distribution based on Debian Stable.

basic log-in question

Forums:

newbie here.

I installed debian with windows 7. It installed great but when I get to the log in page it will not take the user name and password I selected. I thought maybe I had made a mistake so I reinstalled debian again and made very sure of what my user name and password are. Same error as before. It says 'authentication failure'. I downloaded the lastest version of debian and let it download components from the internet.

I am logging in through the graphical user interface.

thank you for any suggestions.

falko's picture

This tutorial explains how to create an OpenVZ template for Debian Wheezy (Debian Testing) that you can use to create virtual Debian Wheezy machines under OpenVZ. I searched for a Debian Wheezy OpenVZ template, but couldn't find one, that's why I decided to create it myself. This guide can also be used for creating Debian Lenny templates and templates for recent Ubuntu versions.

e17, is the error with me, or the developers?

Gentlemen, I (3 days ago) decided that I wanted to install a serious distribution of GNU/Linux, Debian.
I was a follower of windoze, then Linux Mint, and am now trying to make an operating system based on debian and running the e17 desktop. I have successfully run the easy_e17.sh script as found on omnicron.net, but after adding environment variables (after looking up how to do so) of PATH, PYTHONPATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATH encountered the error:

">>>
E17:begin shutdown procedure!"

Has anybody encountered this before?

I have a thesis to write, and though I know the obvious answer is to install gnome on principle of choice I would like my pc to use enlightenment.

How To Set Up SSL Vhosts Under Nginx + SNI Support (Ubuntu 11.04/Debian Squeeze)

falko's picture

This article explains how you can set up SSL vhosts under nginx on Ubuntu 11.04 and Debian Squeeze so that you can access the vhost over HTTPS (port 443). SSL is short for Secure Sockets Layer and is a cryptographic protocol that provides security for communications over networks by encrypting segments of network connections at the transport layer end-to-end. In addition to that I will show how to make use of SNI (Server Name Indication) to allow multiple SSL vhosts per IP address.

Hi,

I have difficulties installing the driver for my new Gigabit nic card (TPLink TG-3269).
I have downloaded the driver TG-3269_100628 from: http://www.tp-link.com/us/support/downl ... n=V1#tbl_a

I have followed the instructions from the README file:

- kernel source tree (supported versions 2.4.x or 2.6.x)
- compiler/binutils for kernel compilation

Unpack the tarball :
unzip r1000_linuxdrv_vxx.zip

Grub install fails when using raid dm-crypt and lvm

Hello,

Recently playing with debian installer on system with two or more disk managed by mdadm and LVM, I have decided to add dm-crypt for root file system and swap space.

Install with debian squeeze CD disk1 on raid mirror hard disk with logical volumes works without any errors during all the installation process.

It get worse when I added dm-crypt (LUKS) module between raid and LVM; as a whole partition encryption which will get physical volume for LMV.
Install works until reaching grub install menu, it fails and tell me "unable to install grub in /dev/sda". See "http://tmpmbox.no-ip.org/squeeze_install_grub_error.jpg".

In all case, /boot partition is created at the beginning disk partition and is not encrypted, nor in logicial volume.
