HDD Installation ProblemsI am trying to transfer my HDD from one pc to another. However, once I have connected my HDD in the new pc, it boots up and gives me the options of "start windows normally", "start with last known good" etc etc. Whichever one I select, the computer just brings me back to the same page each time, in some kind of loop. The drive is set to master and did have a slave in the original pc, but no slave in the destination pc. Can anyone help me please? |
HDD Installation Problems
you are really asking in the wrong place.
however, I think the problem is that windows is not smart enough to detect hardware when you boot. This means that just moving a HDD from one computer to another will ususally not work.
Either find a repair disk or reinstall. Or better: install debian.

Microsoft assumes all its customers are thieves. With WinDos XP and later anti-theft devices are built in; you cannot move a HD from one computer to another - in fact you really can't change much hardware at all before a big screen comes up calling you a thief.
With WinDos 2000, the problem you describe can appear if the system arbitrarily renames your HD or partitions - it may sound incredibly stupid, but WinDos actually does that. In such a case you need to somehow boot from another device and edit the boot.ini file and put in the new ID of the HD to get WinDos to continue booting.

Thanks guys. Bloody Microsoft :)
If I connect the HDD to my current one and set it as a slave will it work, by any chance?

As a slave, you can edit what's on the disk after booting another system (presumably one that can handle NTFS file format). You'll have to discover all the idiot-proofing scams that are built in to prevent you from seeing and editing the boot.ini file though. You need to view system files , don't hide extensions, blah blah blah. You might also try rmoving all the IDE devices from that one computer and plugging the HD into each of the 4 positions using the "cable select" jumper settings on the HD rather than the master/slave. But if you're using XP or VisDuh, the system will simply refuse to work.
