Installing KDE in Debian 4 (etch) with no internet connection

Tags:

Hello all-
I've searched and searched but turned up nothing so far, so I hope my question isn't too redundant.

I'm a Debian newb, and have a classified PC, with absolutely NO access to the internet, running etch. At the time of installation, there were no user requirements for KDE, so I just installed the default set of packages, which installed GNOME.

Now, we need to use KDE to test out an application interface, and I've been trying for several days to install KDE, unfortunately, without access to the internet, thus, no apt-get, I'm somewhat hosed and very frustrated.

I downloaded the cd entitled "debian-40r1-i386-kde-CD-1.iso" from the Debian mirrors, however, when I tried to boot into it, it went through the normal installer questions, then just brought me to a prompt, and did not allow me to install KDE. Additionally, I've looked for a installer program on the .iso cd, but there's nothing there.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Joe

solution

It is not mandatory for apt system to have required packages on a mirror on internet. it can also accept packages on cdroms. I also had a classified system earlier and i used cds for all my installs.
Your new installation seems to have aborted for some reason i can't make out from your post. However if your old one with gnome is still there you can use packages on your kde cd.
Follow this procedure as ROOT:
1. Type: apt-cdrom add
(This will add all packages on your CD which includes kde related packages. If something is missing you can always download or get next 2 cds or 1st dvd and add similarly)
2. Type aptitude install kde
This will read the packages from your kde disk and install kde on your system. It will upgrade some packages also if necessary. I now download the first dvd and add on my system. Most packages you need for general purpose are on dvd1 itself. (ofcourse is system doesn't have dvd-r capability use first few cds)
If this doesn't work for you please get back.
