The Phantom MenaceDubbyah's still pushing for a "missile defense" system in the western part of the old soviet bloc. His so-called "reasons" haven't changed. It's to defend ourselves against an attack from the Iranians using rockets the Iranians do not have and possibly carrying nuclear warheads which the Iranians also do not have. But hey, that didn't stop him from invading Iraq - why let reality influence policy? Phantom threats everywhere - the USA is just not safe! Anyone else get the impression that Dubbyah's smoking all the wrong shit and is on a permanent bad trip? |
The Phantom Menace
Somebody's smoking something , I can't believe the crap thats going on lately!
pillocks
Promoting a missile defense system is so cold war. Has everyone forgotten that the guys who took over the airplanes flown into the pentagon and the world trade center used the high tech equipment of box cutters. These things cost a few dollars each and can't be nullified by a multi-billion dollar missile defense shield.
The world of today has so many soft spots that can be exploited by very simple low-tech stratagems that its hardly necessary to resort to a missile.

It's easy to get distracted by the new and exciting technology - and when you forget the basics you get screwed over and very badly too. This is exactly what happened to the USS Cole while it was anchored off the port of Yemen. All-sky phase-array radar with surface-to-air missiles to guard against aircraft and vulcan cannons to help defend against missiles, and the bad guys row up in a dinghy laden with explosives. No one was keeping guard for frogmen or small boats because that was so 1940's - we have high-tech gear so the enemy must be planning a high-tech attack which we can defend against. (Reminds me of the bugblatter beast of Traal.) Anti-missile defences are extremely expensive and unreliable (they will fire off, but the chance of successful intercept is small). The best defense lies in other tactics.
The reality is that Iran is simply not a significant threat (oh no, I'm believeing the Russians more than our own government). We're not the only ones watching them and if they do something that warrants an attack, they'll get one. Iran doesn't have the rockets and doesn't have the warheads - if we allow them to obtain the rockets or the warheads then someone's totally screwed up somewhere - but in any case a "missile defense system" is pointless.
One thing that really riles me is the "air marshall" thing - I couldn't believe anyone would be so retarded as to even suggest such a thing. I said from the start that the terrorists would crap themselves laughing - no need to smuggle any sort of weapon on board, Kip Hawley makes damned sure the US government provides them for the terrorists. Oh yeah, I feel safe now ...
Consider no Iran.
pinniped,

The Iranians have the money to buy anything they want. They will go nuclear, and short of a war, we can't stop them unless you know something that the governments of the world are hiding.
Would the Russians be pissing and moaning about a missile system that doesn't work? The Red Army no longer has the money to buy an equivalent system so they are worried.
Today's KGB is still a top notch spy organization
and I believe they have their government spooked. You might consider believing the guys in the fur hats with the red stars.
Bush is an idiot. He believed Iraq was the key but Iran is the country he should have invaded. No Iran, no terrorist support. There would have still been terrorists but they would be starving and out of explosives.
Consider the middle east with out the mullahs of Iran.
Consider no Iran.
"No Iran, no terrorist support."
Iran is definitely not supporting Osama - those two types of muslims would happily exterminate eachother. Osama's support comes primarily from our good buddies, the Saudis. Iran is probably behind Syria and Hezbollah though.
"Consider the middle east with out the mullahs of Iran."
Well, Iran was once a democracy (though a very corrupt one). With any luck religion will loosen its hold on the government - but you can bet that won't be voluntary. Unfortunately brain-washing is a very efficient method of controlling the population and the religious revolutionaries have had more than a generation to brainwash so far.
A washed brain is a happy brain.
"Unfortunately brain-washing is a very efficient method of controlling the population and the religious revolutionaries have had more than a generation to brainwash so far."
Don't be knocking brainwashing. It's worked well in this country for over two hundred years.
The rulers have convinced the population they have a say while continuing to rule over the little folk.
Did you ever wonder why Obama is the distant cousin of Cheney? How many of the past presidents are distant kin to Bush?
Is it called keeping it in the family?
