This page suggests that ffmpeg might fit the bill.
For mpeg2 specific files, I've found gopchop to work quite nicely. It took me a while to remember the name of that one!

thats a good article you mentioned. However ffmpeg only divides the file as per time as per the article. Suppose you want to cut away only a portion (say a nice song) only it won't help. ffmpeg is ofcourse a good commandline software I use it for capturing video from my camera.
I have installed gopchop. I'll try it and get back with you.

Ffmpeg is not the best choice. I tried it out but I can't get the result I need. Maybe anyone else has a suggestion?
