gnus or not gnus

Hi

I use emacs with gnus to read nntp newsgroups. I fire it up with M-x gnus and all works.
BUT
$ dpkg -l gnus
No packages found matching gnus.

is this possible? how can you explain it?

thanks

Gnus

I can't say for sure, but I would guess that gnus is shipped as part of Emacs, and doesn't have its own package.

When I search with Synaptic it turns out that there exists a separate package called 'gnus'.

if I install the testing gnus, do you know, when I hit M-x gnus in emacs, whether I will be using the built-in "shipped with emacs testing" gnus OR the newly installed "testing" gnus?

Don't know...

I can not tell you, because I am not using emacs. But I think you should be able to tell which packages are on your system...

Just one of those things...

It seems you're not the first to notice this 'problem.' As it turns out, gnus is packaged with emacs and as a standalone package. This was reported as a bug, but apparently there's no problem. I guess if you want the more up to date one install the standalone package and Emacs will Do The Right Thing.
