Götterdämmerung for the Zionists - the writing is on the wallQANA, Lebanon (Reuters) - An Israeli air strike killed 54 Lebanese civilians, including 37 children, on Sunday, prompting Lebanon to tell U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice she was unwelcome in Beirut before a ceasefire. +++++++ Lebanon's PM thanks Hizbollah for its 'sacrifices' BEIRUT: Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora thanked Hizbollah on Sunday for its "sacrifices" in its war against Israel. "We are in a strong position and I thank the Sayyed for his efforts," Siniora said when asked about a Saturday statement by Hizbollah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah calling on the government to take advantage of Hizbollah's steadfastness against Israeli military might. "I also thank all those who sacrifice their lives for the independence and sovereignty of Lebanon," he added. Siniora, a member of Lebanon's anti-Syrian coalition, has often been at odds with the Syrian-backed Hizbollah but the 19-day-old conflict appears to have brought the two sides closer together. +++++++ BEIRUT (Reuters) - Lebanese protesters broke into the U.N. headquarters in Beirut on Sunday, smashing windows and ransacking offices, after an Israeli air strike killed 54 people in south Lebanon. Several thousand people massed outside the building in downtown Beirut chanting "Death to Israel, death to America. We sacrifice our blood and souls for Lebanon". Geir Petersen, the personal representative of U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan in Lebanon, condemned the Israeli attack on the village of Qana and called for an immediate investigation. +++++++ WORLD REACTIONS: U.K. brands Qana deaths 'quite appalling' British Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett, responding to an Israeli air strike that killed at least 50 Lebanese civilians, including 23 children, said Sunday that the attack was "absolutely dreadful" and "quite appalling." The following is a round-up of world reactions to the Qana deaths. BRITISH FOREIGN SECRETARY MARGARET BECKETT: "It's absolutely dreadful, it's quite appalling. Undoubtedly today's events will make things worse at least in the short term," she told Sky News. "We have repeatedly urged Israel to act proportionately." SYRIAN PRESIDENT BASHAR ASSAD: "The massacre committed by Israel in Qana this morning shows the barbarity of this aggressive entity. It constitutes state terrorism committed in front of the eyes and ears of the world," Assad said in remarks carried by state news agency SANA. LEBANESE PRIME MINISTER FOUAD SINIORA: "There is no place on this sad morning for any discussion other than an immediate and unconditional ceasefire as well as an international investigation into the Israeli massacres in Lebanon now," Siniora told a news conference in Beirut. "The persistence of Israel in its heinous crimes against our civilians will not break the will of the Lebanese people." U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE CONDOLEEZZA RICE: "I think it is time to get to a ceasefire ... We actually have to try and put one in place," Rice told reporters in Jerusalem. "My work towards a ceasefire is really here today." "We have to try and do our work well so that there will not be more and more and more incidents over many, many more years." JORDAN'S KING ABDULLAH II: "This criminal aggression is an ugly crime that has been committed by the Israeli forces in the city of Qana that is a gross violation of all international statutes." FRENCH PRESIDENT JACQUES CHIRAC: "France condemns this unjustified action which demonstrates more than ever the need for an immediate ceasefire without which there will only be other such incidents." Chriac's office said in a statement. GERMAN FOREIGN MINISTER FRANK-WALTER STEINMEIER: "Every use of military force, also in the framework of self-defense, must be proportionate - in particular, victims among the civilian population absolutely must be avoided. That is why I appeal all the more urgently to the parties to the conflict not to block the way to a political agreement on the end of fighting." HEZBOLLAH STATEMENT: "This horrific massacre (at Qana) will not go without a response." THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION: "The Commission has repeatedly requested that both parties come to a ceasefire as soon as possible and that under all circumstances both parties should stick to humanitarian norms and international law," said spokeswoman Katharina Von Schnurbein. SENIOR HAMAS LAWMAKER MUSHIR AL-MASRI: "In the face of this open war against the Arab and Muslim nations all options are open, including striking the depth of the Zionist entity," al-Masri told Reuters. IRANIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY SPOKESMAN HAMID REZA ASEFI: "The Qana bombing is the outcome of (U.S. Secretary Stae Condoleezza) Rice's trip to the region. Some American officials should be put on trial for the crimes in Lebanon," the official IRNA news agency quoted Asefi as saying. POPE BENEDICT XVI: "In the name of God, I call on all those responsible for this spiral of violence so that weapons are immediately laid down on all sides," the Pope said in his Angelus blessing. EGYPTIAN PRESIDENT HOSNI MUBARAK: "The Arab Republic of Egypt expresses its profound alarm and its condemnation of the irresponsible Israeli bombing of the Lebanese village of Qana, which resulted in innocent casualties, mostly women and children," a statement from the president's office published by the state news agency MENA said. INTERNATIONAL CRISIS GROUP ANALYST NICHOLAS PELHAM: "Major Israeli assaults on Lebanon have ended following a major killing of civilians. (The bombing) makes the pressure for an immediate ceasefire that much greater. But an immediate ceasefire would make it more difficult to negotiate the entry of international forces because the pressure will be on Israel rather than Hezbollah." |
Uri Avnery: Mobilize to avenge the blood of Qana
Mobilize to avenge the blood of Qana
By Uri Avnery
07/31/06 "Information Clearing House" -- -- George Bush and his vassal, Tony Blair, are no statesmen. They are war criminals. They claim to be pious Christians. They are the physical manifestation of the devil himself.
Interviewed by the BBC's political editor, Nick Robinson, on Saturday 30 July, Blair repeatedly declined to call for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon.
"Give Israel time to do its job of destruction. Let Israel annihilate Hizbullah and, preferably, Syria as well. When this is done, we shall call for a ceasefire." This is the conclusion which any reasonable person watching Blair's interview would draw. Indeed, it is the conclusion which Nick Robinson himself drew - he said so himself in conversation with the television news presenter after the interview.
Well, Israel has done its job. At least 60 innocent civilians, including many children, were murdered on Sunday 30 July, the very next day after Blair's interview, when Israeli warplanes bombed the basement in which they were sheltering. And still, Bush's vassal will not call for an immediate ceasefire. The closest he would come to this is to call for a ceasefire "as soon as possible", i.e. when Israel has completed its job of murder and destruction.
If there is anyone out there who is still wondering why Arabs and Muslims view Britain and the United States as their implacable enemies, then look no further. To the analysts, experts and commentators, whether in the media or in academia, who are still befuddled as to why Arabs and Muslims are turning to "extremism" and terrorism, we say this: replay the images of murder in Qana, Tyre, Sidon, Beirut and Gaza, then listen again to the war criminal Bush and his poodle Blair resisting calls for a ceasefire, and you have the answer.
Bush and Blair have blood on their hands, oceans of Arab and Muslim blood! The innocents in Lebanon and occupied Palestine are paying a heavy price for the crimes of these two maverick Christian Zionists.
Sadly, many other innocents, not only in the Middle East, but also in Bush's and Blair's own countries will almost certainly pay a heavy price for the actions of these two criminals. For who can doubt that the images of murder in Lebanon and Gaza will inspire many Muslims all over the world to seek revenge? And the victims will almost certainly not be Bush, Blair or the militarist Zionist clique which rules Israel, but innocent people in Europe and the United States.
We urge our Arab and Muslim brothers and sisters not to let murder inspire you to commit murder in revenge, from which only Israel and its allies will gain. Instead, think strategically. Let the blood of the innocents in Lebanon, Palestine and Iraq inspire you to mobilize to isolate Israel and its patrons, politically by seizing the moment and highlighting the reality of Zionism to Western publics, and economically by accelerating the campaign to boycott Israeli goods. It is this, not an eye for an eye, that will ultimately defeat Israel and its imperialist masters, as happened with apartheid South Africa before it. Revenge is a dish best served cold

the sure sign of the lamer
ad-hominems are always the sure sign of a lack of any meaningful argument, of intellectual impotence

Would that be an ad hominem?
vees,
If you persist in insulting me, you might want to check the spellings on the fifty cent words you use.
My ad hominem was a direct attack on the character of a man who would destroy his own people.
Since it was a direct attack because of his past actions, instead of against his present writings alone, would that be an ad hominem?
the only person insulting
the only person insulting you is yourself by your systematically off-topic (-: non-sequitur and ad-hominem :-) posts. for example, my spelling, or lack thereof, are wholly irrelevant to the issue at hand but you fail to see that (not to mention that you do not realize that there is no modern 'official' spelling of latin). Avnery might be the worst person in the history of the world, but that says nothing about his article and trashing him is, of course, another instance of 'fifty cents words' or, more relevantly, fifty cents 'thinking' (same of your pathetic jabs at Chomsky)
if you go over your own posts you will realize how utterly devoid they are of either logic or substance. should i stop pointing this out to you - it will not make them any better.
Only you can stop ridiculing yourself.

Thank You.

George Bush's response is
George Bush's response is incredibly stupid. He said that he wants a ceasefire but only if it leads to a lasting truce. He doesn't want any of those ceasefires where people just stop killing for a few days. AND until such a long-lasting ceasefire is negotiated, Israel can feel free to bomb Lebanon. DUH. A lasting cessation of hostilities is usually called an "armistice" and not a "ceasefire". Historically a "ceasefire" (better known to the thinking classes as a truce) has always been to give civilians a chance to get away and for the armed forces to pick up the dead, and diplomats to talk etc. Dubbyah rewriting the dictionary - oh boy we're in trouble now. Coondoolleeeeeeezzzzaaaaaaa isn't any better with her load of bullshit about "long term peace". Her type of long-term peace won't come until at least one side is exterminated. These idiots in our government are all saying "it's OK to kill eachother because our goal for peace is a long-term one". Doesn't anyone think that's the nadir of stupidity? Go ask the people being bombed what they think of our great leaders.
Why the fathers in Lebanon
pinniped,
Did you ever wonder why the fathers in Lebanon don't get together and run the Hezbollah out of the country? That would save lives and there wouldn't be a need for a truce.
