dvd my debian

Hi
how would I start? I need to get my Asus dvd-rw drive working so that
I can do back ups and things. it is a deskTop with win2000 and debian
which I use the most. any pointers to some overview and gentle intor
to step by step thing.
I have testing 2.6.15, I don't have either discover or hotplug or devfs installed.
is there a dvd-howto, I could only find "CD-Writing HOWTO" on my box.

fred@debian:/dev$ ls | grep dvd
dvd
dvdrw
fred@debian:/dev$ ls | grep cd
cdrom
cdrw
ptycd
ttycd
fred@debian:/dev$

thanks

isn't it just the same as CD HOWTO?

as per subject,

As I understand it;
1) you create an iso (the hard part[1])
2) you burn the iso to the cd or dvd burner.

[1] making a iso is hardest because default settings are for loopy ms file systems and I keep loosing my list of settings for mkiso (?)..

Perhaps if you explain your understanding, peeps can give you better guidance.

I never done this before, so

I never done this before, so I got no clue and no idea where and how to start.

101

1)Read the cd how to, which is really a cd burner howto (kick me if my recollection is wrong). This should give you a good over view.

Note the bit about mounting an iso file into your tree.

####warning, I'm a command line in a terminal nut. Never used a gui for this stuff (they never work in my experience)

2) install mkisofs (?) and "man mkisofs"

If this is a back up system, then you will probably want to use the "read a list of files" from a file trick.

3) mkisofs etc for a few small trials

come back to this list when you need help with the various error messages. mostly to do with mangling everything down to 8.3 and sharing case, multiple dots in filenames, etc.

4) mount the iso and see that it is useful backup, etc.

5) install cdrecord and "man cdrecord"

Again ask on this board

6) problem shoot ide-scsi stuff (again ask here for assistance). P.S. do not try and mix scsi hardware with a system with a ide cd/dvd burner.

7) finally you have an effective backup system.

8) DO NOT EVER loose the command line options for mkisofs once you get them right.

Hopefully, someone will say I'm off my tree and say do this and it will work and you can avoid all the steps above.

For burning: install k3b

I would suggest to install k3b. Setup k3b from that same program. Then you can burn data cd's or dvd's for back up or burn other cd's and/or dvd's (audio/video).

I agree. k3b is by far the

I agree. k3b is by far the best CD/DVD burning application I have ever seen, whether for GNU/Linux, or BSD or even proprietary OSs.
