sbm.bin on sarge cd

I have been trying to make an sbm floppy to install debian sarge.

The problem isn't the old Pentium based DEC multia with limited ide hard drive and external cdrom drive on a NCR scsi unit, which can not be selected as boot device, but just getting sbm.bin onto a floppy.

Step 1. I format the floppy. no problems
Step 2 rawrite2(or3) basically squarkes unable to determine sectors/cyclinders or similar and aborts.

I've tried about five(50 floppies so far.

Looking for clue to the problem.

1)Floppies?

2)Running rawrite 1/2/3 in a dos window on Win2000 doesn't work anyway?

3)rawrite or something on the Sarge CD #1 is faulty

4)faulty floppy drive? (no previous problems)

5)others.

You shouldn't have a problem with sectors/cylinders when using a floppy - just double-check the instructions to see that you got it right.

When you format the floppy, make sure it's "FAT16" - not FAT8/12/32. Hmm... I haven't used WinDos for so long I can't remember how to check.

Thanks.

The fat16 was the clue, except win2000 doesn't recognise fat16,so I tried fat8 and it formated. Must default to fat32.

In anycase, the sbm floppy has been made.

Will have to wait until I go back to trying to set up the 6gb hard disk again, although I've found out sbm is no good for ths boxen as sbm only works with ide cdrom drives, not scsi drives. Bummer.

In the meantime the boxen is set up with a 250mb ide hard disk (holding swap and /boot) with 6x2gb scsi hard disks in a DEC storage works array case connected to it. lol, powerful in their day, but not wonderful now.

If you can connect the storage device(s) to another computer you may be able to load an installer onto it and install that way. Wierd, but it's been done before.

Of course you can connect to another computer and do the install that way, but then you have to fiddle with the configuration before stuffing it back into the original computer or it won't boot.

Sadly, I do not have anything else that connects 2.5" hard disks.

i am still wondering how I set up this miniscule hard disk with linux /boot and swap.
