When I have both CPU's in my motherboard, I get a lot of errors on IDE drive access. On most boot attempts, the system eventually comes up, but all disk accesses are then super slow (I assume they are being retried multiple times).
When I first installed Linux, I had only one CPU in the motherboard, and I didn't have this problem. The problem started when I put in the second CPU. I tried many google searches for related problems, found lots of those, understood very few of the suggested corrections, tried those and improved nothing. I'm back to just one CPU and the problem seems to be gone.
I'll paste the entire dmesg output later in this post, but here are a few extracts I think are relevant:
BIOS failed to enable PCI standards compliance, fixing this error.
I/O APIC: AMD Errata #22 may be present. In the event of instability try
: booting with the "noapic" option.
After doing some google searches on that, I decided to add noapic to the line in /boot/grub/menu.lst that now reads
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18-5-k7 root=/dev/hda1 ro noapic
Was that the correct thing to do for that error? That error message still appears in dmesg even after I rebooted with that change. That error message also appears whether I have one CPU or two. Adding noapic to that line wasn't ignored entirely. There was a message about it during bootup (that went by too fast for me to try to quote accurately) and it changed the output I get from "cat /proc/interrupts". Without noapic most interrupts are on CPU0. But with noapic all interrupts are on CPU0.
The other threads on "AMD Errata #22" seemed to indicate needing more correction than just "noapic" but I didn't nderstand any of the rest. Any suggestions? Of course I'm only guessing that problem even has any connection to my dual CPU IDE problem.
mtrr: your CPUs had inconsistent fixed MTRR settings
mtrr: probably your BIOS does not setup all CPUs.
mtrr: corrected configuration.
The reason I had one CPU removed when I installed Linux was I thought it was broken, because the BIOS sees two CPUs but Windows sees only one. I think the above lines from dmesg might explain why Windows doesn't see the second CPU. I don't know if it has anything to do with this IDE problem. Both CPUs seem to work fine when in Linux. Just the IDE hard drive doesn't work right with the second CPU present.
With one CPU the output of "cat /proc/interrupts" is below. With two CPUs and noapic, it looked similar to that but with a column of zeros for CPU1.
