installing the boot splash theme

i want to change the way debian boot. i am bored with the text mode. i want it to boot like windows in the graphical mode. how can i do this? will this graphical mode slow down the booting process?

iam using debian 2.6.18(etch).

i want to install it using the dpkg -i command

The answer will depend a lot on your kernel configuration and hardware (CPU,MEM,etc), but ussually is insignificant.

I recommend you to use splashy, the replacement for bootsplash.

It doesn't need the kernel to be patched
