Boot Problems

Installed Debian 4.01r Etch on new Samsung hard drive added to my Pentium III System running at 500,MHz. Already had Windows 2K loaded on C Drive. Plan was to change boot device order in CMOS to select the system to boot. Now cannot boot either system. I Get a "Loading Grub..." then an error 16 or 18 no matter which drive I select as the boot device. Why was the boot sector on drive C modified when I selected the other drive to install Debian, and how can I fix it?

in case of error 16

whenever i get 16 (if your 16 is: inconsistent file structure), I take some live linux distro (there are those really small ones you can put on a 128 mb usbstick, i forgot the name but found it googling around.), boot from it (USB or CD/DVD) and mount and umount the disks causing 16. then I reboot the system and everything works fine.

In your case, I would put the disks in the old order, boot from a live CD or USB, mount those disks and then reboot again. If this doesn't help I would probably again use live distro with to chroot to my hard-disk distro (as pinniped once instructed me) and then reinstall grub (for this approach c.f. http://www.debianhelp.org/node/1119 for how to use chroot).

Oh, yes, since my problems weren't exactly like yours what I have just told you might not work. :-) .
Do not despair though, there are true Linux sages in this forum. Me just "experienced" user.
