Program placementI've got yet another question. Say you had a tarball, got it untarred and all, how would one get into applications. Also, if one wasn't using firefox but another browser and email program, how would one get those into the top bar? I don't have an ongoing issue, but will have in the future, I'm sure (though I do use Opera browser). Thanks a lot. Everyone here is so patient and I appreciate it! John |
Program placement
Tarballs heed no general rules. Therefore they come with instructions. Caution and experience advised.
Use deb packages, they are designed not to cause trouble (emphasis on "designed not to" :-) )
deb packages
Yes, sometimes--a lot of times I've had trouble with deb packages despite the instruction. I think it takes some pre configuration which I'm in the process of doing! Yes on the tarballs...once they are open one better read the instructions.
Program placement
You mean the top bar on a Gnome screen? Right-click the bar, click Add To Panel, then Custom Application Launcher. The Command field should be set to the path of the program executable file.

Thanks!
Many thanks on that tidbit of information, Tony. I do appreciate everyone's answers, speculations, and comments in this excellent forum. John
