2"5 HDD's for continious operations

Hello,

I have killed again a 2"5 drive from a Raid-5 (3Ware) and
want to ask you, WHICH 2"5 HDD's are made for 24/7 use.

I know Hitachi manufactur drives, but how can I identify
them and which are the otther manufacturers?

I need thre 12-20 GByte drives for a Raid-1 plus hotfix
and five 120-250 GByte drives for a Raid-5 plus hotfix.

AND NO, 3"5 drives are NO SOLUTION, since they have no
protection agains vibratins and shocks. I use an µITX
as fileserver in my motorcaravan for my ThinkPad.

Thanks, Greetings and nice Day

I just discovered S.M.A.R.T was disabled in my BIOS. Just FYI.

Oops! -- But it seems, S.M.A.R.T. does not work with my 3w85xxS-4LP.

That is most unfortunate to hear because SMART has actually predicted
a disk failure for me. It was on a system that I left running anyway.
I had not actually see any disk problems yet and was starting to
believe that SMART was falsely reporting an error. But then later
while running tasks that scanned the disk seeing if I could verify
that there was a disk problem or not I started to see disk I/O errors
logged by the kernel to the syslog. The disk really did start failing
just as predicted. But I was forewarned by the prediction and in a
good situation to handle the failure.

Good luck!

Bob

Even using the `smartctl -a -d 3ware,0 /dev/twe0` syntax?

Yes, I know the syntax and it works on my older 3w900xS-4 and the new
3w95xxS-8 but it fails on 3w85xxS-4LP. Unfortunately 3Ware has not
respond to the problem.

but of course, always check the datasheet before purchasing ;-)
and i saw one datasheet (don't remember which one), that explicitly
said "for blade servers" , therefore the crossposting, maybe someone
on debian-isp has experience with these disks
and if someone knows a supplier in the americas...

just did a bit research on that, because i need some as well.
and i found:
'E' stands for enhanced, that's the ones for 24/7.
so, HTE5K... f.ex. means Hitachi Travelstar Enhanced 5400rpm,
where HTS5K... means Hitachi Travelstar Standard.
so it's the E5K... and E7K... series we are looking for.
Don't know about other manufacturers.

cheers
