ftp access confusion

Hi everyone.. ftp://uploads.google.com directly opens, but ftp://mysite.com does not open. error msg is 421-unable to set up secure anonymous ftp.
By ftp://username:password@mysite.com , both epiphany and iceweasel just keep running without fetching content. However, just for checking, when wrong password is entered.. it promptly refuses.
If tried to access thro Filezilla, login etc goes fine, but then gettin error saying directory listing denied..
What to do? especially to access by any of the first two methods?

hi everyone.. this can be overcome another way! by using gftp; it has the options for enabling passive ftp, enabling directory view and all the other necessary features for ftp transactions..
