newbies and non-technical users want X to start ALWAYS!!!I was upgrading my system to use Anjuta at the weekend and for some reason when I rebooted I got a failure to start X. I have not yet got to the bottom of the problem but I have got X started by booting up from Knoppix, saving the X log and xorg.conf and then putting an old xorg.conf in its place. In order for Debian (linux generally) not to be a snobby "Techies Only" operating system it really is time that when a system fails to load X that it has a couple of sensible alternative attempts to sort this out before it gives in to the command prompt (in my opinion.) Responses would be welcome. |

If I ever get the opportunity (or predicament) to become a manager for the X project, I'll sure give your opinion a thought. :-)))))
Until then, I guess we'll need to bash our system into submittion each time X fails.
Re: newbies and non-technical users want X to start ALWAYS!!!
It should be possible when companies like NVidia release the appropriate specifications for their chips so people can write free device drivers. It is incredibly unlikely that you would have such problems if your video chip was supported by one of the free drivers in X.org. Starting X with a generic VGA or SVGA driver wouldn't really work well - that's just as bad as being dumped into the command line. Well, OK - if you had svga at least you could use a graphical internet browser. But now you know, so you can keep a spare xorg configuration file to use when the same thing happens on the next big upgrade.
