Piracy funds terror attacksPiracy funds terror attacks THE US Attorney General Michael Mukasey has claimed that counterfeiting and piracy is funding terrorism. Yep, all those students downloading Coldplay tracks are actually responsible for financing the bad guys who are shooting at our boys in Afghanistan and Iraq. Mukasey was speaking to Silicon Valley executives at the Tech Museum of Innovation, in defence of the US' bizarre software patent system and copyrights. He claimed that terror groups are taking their cues from organised crime and increasingly funding their operations from intellectual property theft, he said. Terrorist groups, "view IP crime as lucrative and see it as a low-risk way to fund other activities," Mukasey said. Strong stuff. However, it might be because he had just met with lobbiyists from Apple and Adobe just before he got on the stage. AP said that he did not elaborate how piracy was generating any money for anyone. But elections mean that you need all the cash you can get. |
Re: Piracy funds terror attacks
The war on terror has been used for the justification of pretty much anything. From what I heard during his confirmation testimony, Mukasey is bad news. He's basically a smarter neocon than his predecessor who subscribes 100% to the unitary theory of the executive.
Specifically about downloading, I don't see how our existing copyright law is constitutional. The US code allows the plaintiff to ask for a minimum of $750 per song. The jury has no say in the minimum penalty. Given that a song is worth $1, sounds like cruel and unreasonable punishment to me.

Afghanistan is the first producer of opium, the business is flourishing under foreign occupation, production has boomed according to the latest reports. Pakistan is a great producer too, and oil is providing some bucks too, so is illegal mining. Sure, that little boy downloading an album or two a month is a nasty bloodthirsty bastard, let's take him down for good and the world will be a better place...
