testing or etch now and laterHi I have been using debian for 2 years now, on and off. one question is on the back of my mind which I never cared to ask. when I have testing in my /etc/sources.list does this mean I have etch now and etch later and etch foever more? thanks |
it means you have etch now
it means you have etch now and XX later as sid is and always will be unstable.
all linux debian releases are named after characters in the movie toy story, Sid was the kid next door always breaking his toys, therefore, sid will always be unstable.
sid = unstable
That's kind of ironic given that sid is the parent of all stable Debian releases. The developers must really have to work hard to fix the toys after Sid gets through with them!
If you want etch, it's
If you want etch, it's better to make the switch from "testing" to "etch" now in your sources.list. Otherwise, if you upgrade after the release of etch, you'll have passed etch up. ( Been there, done that. :-) )
testing or etch now and later
my /etc/sources.list now is
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ testing main contrib non-free
deb http://secure-testing.debian.net/debian-secure-testing/ testing/security-updates main contrib non-free
to switch to etch, do I change the first line to
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ etch main contrib non-free
the second line for the security, does the below apply?
deb http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main
do I need to apt-get dist-upgrade for this? I mean testing and etch are the same right now.
Right now you're running
Right now you're running etch, if you want to stay with etch when it's moved to stable, then do those changes. If you want to stay in the testing distro, then don't.
apt-get dist-upgrade won't do a thing... except update those packages that have changed since the last dist-upgrade.
