Can't get Ice weasel (aka firefox)to connect to internetI am a novice user attempting to migrate to GNU/Linux. Have installed Debian and it is working fine. I downloaded firefox from the mozilla website and managed to figure how to install it and it will load but not connect to the internet. I am using the KDE desktop and the default browser that came with it works just fine and connects to the internet but ice weasel won't connect. I get a message that says something to the effect to make that the firewall permissions are set to allow it to connect to the internet. I would gladly set the firewall permissions if I knew how but I can't find any bloody firewall in any of the various applications menus. I can navigate through most windows problems like nobody's business but I am at a loss when it comes to Linux based systems. I have tried the uninstall and reinstall trick that works most of the time on windows but to no avail on Debian. My internet connection is DSL connected through a Linksys Router through CAT5 Cable. So how the heck do I get firefox(ice weasel) start surfing the internet? I love the browser in windows and wont use IE if I can help it; I would like to use it in Debian. It was issues like this that has made me to shy away from other flavors of Linux systems. But I am determined not to be put off by this any longer. I don't let windows push me around so why should Linux be any different. Ok, enough of my ramblings how do I fix this? |

I'm a new user too - my 3rd day running debian, but as far as i know, it should connect. Have you changed anything? I remember that certain ports are different for linux then xp. But- it should have a connection setting screen on the browser. Did you try these yet? do you know your ports? if you do, that would be the first place to look. Have you restarted and reboot and that sort?

No changes were made yet, done the connection screen that was the first thing I tried. Did the restart and reboot thing already. By ports do you mean internet ports tcp and the like? I never mess with those, don't know enough about them. What do you think about setting the proxy to point to my router?
Re: Can't get Ice weasel (aka firefox)to connect to internet
Since your default browser connects fine and you didn't actually set up any firewall, the chances are there is none. Have a look in the Iceweasel preferences. Click Edit -> Preferences -> Network -> Connection -> Settings, and set the Direct Connection option. That should be all there is to it.

That was my first action, tried setting to auto detect and direct connect nada. Incidentally I downloaded it directly from mozilla, don't know if that makes any difference. I just tried to do an install from kpackage had to reboot to windows to read this post. Seems konquorer doesn't like debianhelp.org I can view the main page but as soon as I click on a post it crashes. Almost feels like my computer is conspiring to keep me using windows, lol.
Re: Can't get Ice weasel (aka firefox)to connect to internet
I want to that you guys for you replies, the issue has been resolved. Through my relentless determination I have found the root of the problem and learned a few things about firefox. The dns protocol IPv6 was the problem, by default it is active in firefox it is deactivated by accessing the configuration file and toggling it. To access the configuration file type about:config and navigate to network.dns.disableIPv6 then right-click and toggle to true. Once I did that I was surfing the net once again in my favorite browser.
