I want to install linux on HPnx9420

Hello people,

Has anybody tried to install debian or something else on HP nx9420? Or other duo core config? What are the experiences?

I should mention that this is the first time I am installing Linux to a laptop. Any precautions to take?

too new for me...

All I can say is, after installation (whatever that may entail), don't forget to install an -smp kernel to make use of your CPU/s.

current development

Yesterday I installed the latest Knoppix and the laptop "works". Only wired networking works from the start, but I hope to get new kernel source and compile it to suit my needs soon. Then with patches from Intel I will probably get WiFi working. Probably. Right now the notebook works with half a brain and no communication skills. Oh, yes bluetooth works great.

The story so far

After installing Knoppix I used debootstrap to install pure Debian Sarge on the laptop. You can find description of this process in the Installation Issues subforum - http://www.debianhelp.org/node/1392.

Now everything works smoothly. Oh, I didn't (yet) installed the WiFi support for the 3??5 ABG Intel Pro/Wireless card, but this shouldn't represent a problem since there are drivers on the Net.

(NB 1) When compiling a new kernel include ACPI in the kernel in order to prevent frying the processor. Also, It won't be a bad thing to update BIOS.

(NB 2) The keyboard has issus - when rebooting from Linux sometimes it does not respond at early boot stage (including a bootloader menu selection stage). Somebody somewhere said that this could be prevented by removing a psmouse module with modprobe -r previos to reboot/shutdown.

(NB 3) The HDAUDIO... modem is in fact a Connexant modem for which you need hsf drivers obtainable at http://www.linuxant.com. Not only that this driver is not free (as in freedom), but you have to pay for the licence. However, it works.
