Dead end during installInstalling v4r3 I386 from floppies leads me to a dead end on several (widely distinct) machines. The sequence is composed of my actions (numbered) interspersed with the computer's display: 1. Boot floppy with boot.img Loading linux . . . 2007-03-08 etch2 Choose region Load drivers from floppy Select Keyboard Select debconf priority Exec shell # Installer Main Menu Clearly step 9 above is an opportunity to do something useful, but having read the installation manual, the install FAQs, the release notes, and the errata notes, I've not noticed anything that specifies what I should do once I reach the shell step. Did I miss something or is there somewhere else I should look for guidance? |
Re: Dead end during install
Does the installer dump you to a shell on it's own? It shouldn't (and as far as I'm aware, the CD installers have never done that). The "execute a shell" has always been an option for people who want to do more unusual things. Otherwise, you just proceed through the list in the order to keep the installer script happy, and when you get near the end of the list you should be able to select an installation medium (floppy, CD, HD, network), install the bootloader, and reboot to finish installation (the base system boots and runs another script that asks you about the desktop etc).
If you press [alt][F3] and [alt][F4] you get some 'information screens' that tell you a bit about the current step being performed by the installer and some problems which may have been encountered. [alt][F2] brings you back to virtual console #1 (the installer).

No, it just offers to shell out. No matter what the shell step is the last constructive step allowed. The actual final step is "abort installation" which just reboots.
I've installed sarge a few dozen times. But in etch I never get to set up partitions, file systems, networks, etc. The strangest aspect is that there is no exit strategy other than abort.
I checked the alt-F4 console and saw nothing interesting. I will check the other console for messages as well.
What is the install step that is supposed to follow selection of a keyboard?
Re: Dead end during install
After selecting a language and keyboard I would expect (not in any particular order):
Detect hardware + network
Set up HD and select partitions to install to
Select source for installation files (CD, HD, net, floppies)
Select other drivers to install into the initrd image
If you have access to another computer which can boot from CD, it might be easier to install using that computer then just transfer the HD back and tweak a few things.
