Why is Verizon censoring us?Verizon actively seeks to curtail access to the public forum and freedom of speech in the following ways: * by lobbying against effective broadband competition This is far more than a geeky issue. As I argue in-depth in my blog http://expressivebits.blogspot.com, this is a fundamental issue of democratic principle and should concern every citizen concerned about the openness, vitality, and transparency of our democratic system. I'm compiling a list of all residential ISPs)who engage in such practices. Please help. If you know of any ISP guilty of such practices, please provide in a comment to this post. Many guilty ISPs have virtual broadband monopolies in their service areas. This makes the matter even more serious. To find out if your ISP is guilty, enter Google search terms such as: * "yourISP + broadband + competitive practices" Here's a the anti-server provision in Verizon's Terms of Service document -- way down in the fine print: "You also may not exceed the bandwidth usage limitations that Verizon may establish from time to time for the Service, or use the Service to host any type of server. Violation of this section may result in bandwidth restrictions on your Service or suspension or termination of your Service." Exceed the bandwidth usage limitations: Fine. Network carriers are entitled to a fair return on their investment and operating costs. Use the Service to host any type of server: Absolutely Not! Network carriers should not be allowed to restrict lawful content or free speech or access to the public forum. |
Re: Why is Verizon censoring us?
Forget the censoring - apparently they're policing you too.
So you're not allowed to run "any type of server" - better shut down remote access and remote login services. Also shut down 'ping', 'finger', ICMP messaging in general ... so, you probably get the impression that the wording was by a clueless moron - either a top-level manager or else a lawyer. What most ISPs do generally forbid is a server operated for commercial gains, and even when you operate a server for, say, a charity the ISPs would want you to pay for one of the "business" plans rather than the private consumer plans. So far thta doesn't sound so bad. But now we step into the realm of net censorship (and Verizon is 100% for that, and for assisting spy agencies in unlawfully obtaining information about you). "No Servers" I'm guessing is meant to be no Russian pr0n, no peer-to-peer file sharing networks, etc. If Verizon is forcing that restriction on you then they are acting as police, and that's really none of their business. If customers break the law, it's up to the police to deal with them, not the ISP. Of course, as regular citizens, people in the ISP should inform the police if they are aware of anything unlawful going on. On the other hand, how do they know something unlawful is going on without spying on you?
I'm betting the ISPs are all in favor of spying because they believe no one will hold them accountable (they're all following Microsoft's lead!) Monopolies and Cartels in general love to tie down the consumer using tricks like these. Just look at the behavior of the "music industry" - they have robbed people of their consumer rights and most people never complained. Companies like Verizon are encouraged by user apathy and stupidity and are simply trying to take advantage of the situation to screw them out of more money.
Re: Why is Verizon censoring us?
It is not censorship when one denies another the use of one's property to communicate their ideas.
Am I 'censoring' graffitti artists when I whitewash a wall on the front of my building to replace it with a mural?
This is the exact same situation, only with digital property and not physical property. To equate this with censorship is a gross misunderstanding of the meaning of the word censorship.
Having said that, I would support any boycott of Verizon for making this decision.

Re: Why is Verizon censoring us?
I disagree. I pay for a certain amount of bandwidth up, and a certain amount down. I am not paying Verizon to restrict the protocols that I can run. The analogy with censorship is a good one.
