democracy in action

Mr Gates (no, not Redmond Bill) says we're "stuck" with gitmo:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7411862.stm

What astounds me in the report is the quote from Gates:

"What do you do with that irreducible 70 or 80 who you cannot let loose but will not be charged and will not be sent home?"

Huh ... run that one past again ... "cannot let loose but will not be charged and will not be sent home"?

So Gates is saying:
1. The prisoners are terrorists
2. There is no evidence against them (therefore, not charged)
3. They will not be released

Didn't someone named Joseph Stalin imprison people like that? Accused of being terrorists and spies for other countries, they were imprisoned or murdered without any evidence against them nor would they be released because they were a "threat to the public". When did the commies win the US presidential election?

Re: democracy in action

Here's novel solution RFID tags in the posterior deceptively disguised as a gamma globing shot. Release them to what ever country that will take them with the threat of death the next time they are caught. Then track their movements via satellite and gather intel. The best agent for infiltration is one who doesn't even know that they are an agent, and if the RFID tag is discovered perhaps the other terrorist will suspect the tag individual as a traitor and do him in.

Re: democracy in action

You mean chip 'em like pets? Maybe we ought to do that will all prisoners - then as they walk through the RFID gate at airports and supermarkets, security can immediately be alerted with their rap sheet up on the screen. I really don't know what to make of Gates' comments though - if they're terrorists, why aren't they being charged?

The only problem with tagging them is that they can go back to wherever, and if they're terrorists they'll go on training other terrorists.

Like many others who have traveled around the planet, I think there is an endless pool of terrorists. There are many countries where the people are just so damned stupid that they're starving etc and can't sort out their problems. On the television they see how other people live in the "rich" countries. Then they blame all those "rich" countries for all their problems. On many occasions I've heard the USA blamed for corruption in third world nations and I tell people: No, the problem is that you goddamned monkeys are lazy and corruptible; the USA has virtually nothing to do with your problems. But no one wants to take any responsibility for things these days. Unfortunately, the reality is that the USA will always be demonized by uneducated people who envy it. It doesn't help any that businesses go into these third world nations and join in the corruption game - as a matter of principle, they should stay out and let the place go to hell on its own. The first thing to do is enforce a ban on sales of weapons - and I mean enforce it by sinking ships carrying weapons shipments (with all crew on board). Once the thugs with guns run out of ammo, then they're on equal footing with the oppressed and the country has some hope of settling down. Since that's not happening (can't upset the gun runners now, can we), you can bet there are a lot of terrorists in the making out there. Attacking Afghanistan addresses just one terrorist faction; attacking Iraq addresses nothing, and there are numerous other horrible places on the planet where the terrorists are literally breeding like flies.

The whole point of tagging them and releasing them is that that they would go back to these camps with terrorist so that we can find where they are and wipe them out. I like you idea of tagging the criminals, but they should also do it to sex offenders and pedophiles. As far as Gates comments are concerned you have to consider the source and take it with a grain of salt, a very big grain of salt. The media is a very biased organization that is not above stretching the story line a little and since the current administration is not in line with their political views they tend make the administration look even worse than they actually are; not that they need any help looking bad. I tend not to watch the news not because of the obvious bias but rather because there isn't any thing on the new but bad news and bickering politicians and who wants to watch that? Personally I think the solution is to shoot all the politicians and put real people in government, but that would be a little too extreme.
