grub-installer: "this may take a long time"

The grub-installer logs the following advisory:
"Probing devices to guess BIOS drives. This may take a long time."

Just how long is a "long time"? I.e., when do I decide it will never finish?

How long depends on your hardware (how old/slow is the machine). I've never seen the grub installer hang at that stage, but if it did, you can always install a different way (see the manual). That script has a fairly high failure rate at guessing which disk is which anyway - in fact, for me it has a 100% failure rate.
