1440 x 900 resolution

I have played around with Debian for a short while, but I’m a total newbe ‘under the hood’.
I have just installed Etch, via a live CD and want to change the screen resolution to 1440x900 to fit my wide screen monitor. I have a ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro video card.
Help from the very beginning to do this would be very much appreciated as I want to learn as much as possible. THX

Re: 1440 x 900 resolution

Log in as root on a text console. Press ALT+F1 (or F2 ...F6) to get to a text console. Type dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and answer the questions put to you. They are about the graphics cards, mouse, keyboard, etc. You can leave everything as it is until you come to the monitor setting. There you should look for the screen resolutions and choose the correct one. It would be good to have the manual from your monitor so you can set the correct frequencies as well. If you do not find your screen resolution in the list, you can set it manually in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. But only if it is necessary.
Then restart your login manager (kdm, gdm, xdm) by typing /etc/init.d/kdm restart. (or gdm, xdm)

added the 1440x900 resolution, but it doesn't show up on the pull down menu in the GUI.
