Debian Etch install attempts on Dell Vostro

I bought a new Dell Vostro 200 to devote to Linux. It has a Sata drive and an NVIDIA GEFORCE 8300GS video. KNOPPIX 5.3(2.6.24.2) boots up nicely showing the drive and displaying video using Xorg. Network card is also immediately recognized and usable. When I try to install Debian ETCH it get questioned on network card. I select e1000 which KNOPPIX uses but it does not recognize the card. So I move on without the network install and then everything moves on to completion BUT I end up without X11 running claiming NO DEVICES DETECTED and then also NO SCREENS FOUND.
I believe I have the lastest ETCH but am not sure it is at the same KERNEL version as KNOPPIX. I read I can load the e1000 driver for the network card/motherboard after the install completes but the video is now the latest problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

thanks, pquin

Re: Debian Etch install attempts on Dell Vostro

Hi
Etch shall have a slightly older kernel and xorg server than your knoppix 5.3

Try reconfiguring the xserver using the command dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg (Make sure to set a low colourdepth and see if it works).

If you are not able to do I suggest using Debian lenny (on which Knoppix 5.3 is based) where things would definitely work out for you. There is a beta release 2 available for lenny from cdimage.debian.org/cdimage which you could try. That also offers a 2.6.24 kernel.
