This might not be the correct place but...

OK this might not be the right place to ask for help about this....but then, im sure that you will give me directions in that case ;)
I'm also a newbie here :D

I have a CD with a netinstall for Debian 5.0 Beta 2 (this is the reason it might not be the right place)...

I installed it in a PC w/o special issues....

The days have passed and i installed it in another Pc with *exactly* same hardware configuration and parts brands/models.

After standard instalation whjen was customizing it, when tryed to change the repositories in Synaptic, it refused !!!
Actually it didn't refused...what happened was:

I select Settings, then Repositories....and instead of letting me to check/mod/whatever the repositories, it simply pops up
the window that usually does after we make changes and press "OK" telling in that window that repositories have changed and that i need to hit "Reload" !!! but the fact bis that i didn't changed them not even saw what are the settings !!!

With this new bug, i can't had the contrib and the non-free repositories and can't access non-free stuff that i need like Sun's Java (which is the only flavor of Java that works with an JAVa app that i need to use !!!)

TIA,
AJSB

Re: This might not be the correct place but...

That's strange - are you running as 'root'?

Re: This might not be the correct place but...

When synaptic starts it asks for root pw and i give it...same pw that i use for the other PC...so, yes, when runnug synaptic, i'm running as root (kinda).

Maybe the CD got somehow corrupted in some weird manner ?!?

Another interesting thing is that at install time, 1st comp some days ago installed litle more than 770 packages, now this one installed 792 files from the (same) repo !!! Again, both comps with *exactly* same hardwarwe...

or is it possible that Debian uploaded some new files to the repos that are installed at instalation time and one or more has a bug that affects synaptic ?!? After all, this is a Beta version !

TIA & Regards,
AJSB

Re: This might not be the correct place but...

Hi
Yes being beta version more packages may have got updated. Please remember most of the packages are softwares and have nothing to do with the hardware on which its installed (unless they need some specific hardware feature e.g. the kernel). Due to this number may go up. It keeps changing from time to time depending on the frequency and quantity of update in testing version.
Since the synaptic seems to have an error my suggestion is to do this in commandline as root:-
edit /etc/apt/sources.list and add the line
deb http://ftp.debian.org/ lenny main contrib non-free
at end of the file. Delete any faulty entries. (you can edit this in gedit if u don't like command line or are unfamiliar with vi).
After saving and closing.
run 'apt-get update'
to get package list.
Then you can install any package you want with the command
'aptitude install -y '
e.g. u want to install sun's java packages then run
aptitude install -y sun-java6-jre sun-java6-jdk

Maybe the bug is already sorted out in synaptic (if any) and on upgrade maybecome ok too. (apt-get upgrade). Although personally i feel upgrade should be done few days at a time in testing.

Hildebrand

Re: This might not be the correct place but...

Thanks for your help :)

editing the sorces.list file did the trick....however, i did use nano instead ( i prefer it) and used the repo for my own country (basicly simply had to the end of the lines contrib and non-free and that did the trick)

BTW, before done it i reinstalled it and now it installs even more files (893 IIRC)...it also now recognizes at 1st boot my VIA chrome9 chipset w/o the need for me edit xorg.conf and also the video is perfectly syn'ed with my TFT again without the need for ctrl+alt+"+" and then xorg.conf editing :)

I start to really enjoying Debian 5.0 ;)
