IBM Thinkpad seiries I 1300 wifi saga

After a lot of fighting I now have a working kde lenny debian system with one big problem. The wifi will not work.
To make a long week of testing story short, I tried to install a usb wifi only to discover that the computer can get a signal strength without the usb card being plugged in. The signal strength decreases if I cover the routers antena so it is really working. The problem is that Ping and firefox will not work and I don't know how to make them work.

I think we should start from the start because I don't know what this hardware is or how to find out. I also could have easily messed up something as I tried to get things to work.
The computer is an IBM thinkpad series I. It has a working updated lenny debian in it running KDE. It also shows the signal strength with a little kicker monitor. That says that it is on eth0.

Thanks
Douglas
