root permissions & authentication corruption

Hi Guys,

I need some help. Our Debian Squeeze server seems to have corrupted permissions and groups. We were not able to login as su with any user or mount drive, start packages that required root/su permissions. E.g. When plugin in a USB we get “Error mounting: mount exited with exit code1: helper failed with: Mount: must be superuser to use mount”. We have managed to change the root password and changed the permissions on the su directory with “chmod +s /bin/su” and we are now limping along but the overall issues still remain.

Has any admin out there had similar issues and been able to resolve? I am really in a pickle and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
Richard

hi Richard,
can me tell you what you do after plugging in the usb? What command do you use as which user?

Can you tell me the contents of the line of the /etc/fstab file with the usb mount point?
