proftpd + gcc help

Hi All,

Just installed proftpd (lastest stable release) and I couldnt get the client to connect, left it all open and still it wasnt going to play. Even after server reboot.

I have now downloaded an old release, 1.2.6 however I am getting issues when installing.

I have apt-get install gcc, as it was looking for a C compiler, but now however its reporting "checking for C compiler default output... configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables"

Please either:

A - How I can configure the C Compiler error

B - Suggest how I can get a simple ftp server working so I can work on a simple project. hehe ;-)

Anything wise words of wisdom will be appreciated..
