Hello everyone! This is my first post and i would like to start off by saying i am very new to debian/linux in general. That being said, i am having problems installing any software after i somehow screwed up something having to do with dpkg. Whenever i try to install anything with apt-get install , this error is thrown:

"dpkg: unrecoverable fatal error, aborting:
syntax error: unknown group 'sasl' in statoverride file
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2)"

The error first occurred when i was trying to install "gnome-desktop-environment". Before that no problem installing anything.

Thanks! (Should also mention this is a VPS running debian minimal. I am accessing it through a console on the provider's site.)

Figured out the problem, the contents of the statoverride file were leftover from an installation. Deleting the file solved the problem.
