Newbie troubles [login]

Well this probably has some kind of obvious answer that I'm just missing because I'm a newb to this, but anyways..

I think the actual installation of debian went well, but I just can't get past the login. it says:

"debian login:" where I've tryed both the user account name I gave it and the root account name I gave it then once I hit enter and "password:" comes up it wont let me type anything, if I hit enter again I can see the password being typed instead of *'s coming up so I'm assuming that's not actually working, even trying that I keep getting "Login failed" messages.

Any idea what could be up? :( Let me know if there's anymore information I could give you.
