I need a wireless card/adapter reccomendation

Tags:

Hi,

I am looking for a PCMCIA wireless card (or USB wireless adapter) which would work 'out of the box' with Debian. I am a total wireless ignoramus and newbie and I really don't feel like fiddling with any configuration issues to make it run.

I plan to use it with my laptop in public places like hotel lobbies or Starbucks-type cafes/restaurants.

Thanks for any reccomendations!

quite a few resources:

http://linux-wless.passys.nl/ (I use this site a lot)
http://tuxmobil.org/pcmcia_linux.html
http://www.linux-wlan.org/docs/wlan_adapters.html.gz

I suggest after identifying a few readily available PCMCIA devices on the .nl site, look at the other sites or try to dig up comments about the device before actually buying. Everyone claims "support", but support ranges from "will work under very specific conditions and only under certain Linux from RH" to "will work with any Linux with kernel > A.B.C".

Caveat: The device revision number is extremely important. Sometimes a "gizmo 2000 version 1.2" has an entirely different chipset from "gizmo 2000 version 1.3" and will absolutely not work. So - DON'T buy over the internet, walk into a shop and look at the numbers on the package.

I cannot give you any advice for PCMCIA gadgets because the last lot I bought were USB.

what USBs do you have?

Hi Pinniped,

Thanks for all the links - I will go through them.

What USB adapters do you have and do you have one which you would particularly reccommend?

Thanks,

wireless pcmcia card

I bought this http://www.radiolabs.com/products/wireless/networking/long-range-notebook-wifi-kit.php and a buffalo combo router. I have sarge on the laptop and it worked fine right out of the box. However, I did find the folks at radiolabs a bit unpleasant and wouldn't buy from them agian. Unless you want the long range feature the senao 2511 card is available for about $50 at lots of other places.
