Re: GPS units with Linux

I'm also new to using a GPSr, so take that with a caveat.

To me, the GPSr world is a proprietary, twisted world of various commercial ties.

First, if you look at the bottom of this web page you'll see a link to Package Listings, there are a few GPS-related apps for various functions packaged for Debian. Do 2 searches, both names and descriptions, for "GPS" and you'll turn them up.

The interfaces for GPSrs are very proprietary. My GPSr, a DeLorme Earthmate PN-40, has a bunch of commercial tie-ins to geocaching.com. This is both at the hardware and software level. It's sad, but it seems the entire geocaching world is being taken over by this commercial web site, with varying levels of integration between hardware, software, and the Internet. IMHO, the GPSr world is like the Windows world, only worse.

Re: GPS units with Linux

Some programs you might find useful for with your GPS might be:

mkgmap - generates Garmin-format (.img) maps from OpenStreetmap downloads.
gpsman - graphical program for uploading/downloading/editing tracks/waypoints/routes. I think QLandkarte also does a similar job.
gpsbabel - converts between different GPS formats. I've never needed to use it.

Tony.
