p2p clients/limewire/javaI've just tried to put limewire on my computer as well as gtk-gnutella and neither of them load at all - they dont even come up as a process in system monitor. I was thinking the problem might be something to do with java. I've had a bit of a look around for java stuff but none of the advice is on my level. There's no message when they dont work they just dont! I kindof assumed i'd already have java on my computer but im starting to think otherwise. Jonny |
can anyone help with this?
can anyone help with this? i've not had any ideas.

Re: p2p clients/limewire/java
Just type a "java -version" into a command line to see if Java is installed.
Sun's Java is not included in Debian because of its non-free licensing. There are free JVMs included in Debian, but some apps are very picky about their JVM and more or less demand Sun's.
For Sarge/Stable, to install Sun's Java, install the Debian package "java-package". Read the docs on it in /usr/share/doc/java-package/. java-package will take a Sun JVM tarball and create a nice *.deb out of it. You can then install the new Java *.deb with "dpkg -i packagename.deb" and update/remove/etc. it with the regular Debian package tools.
Java?
I don't think gtk-gnutella depends on Java - gnutella does not and I don't see why a GTK interface would use Java.
After installing via, for example, apt-get install gtk-gnutella, you still need to run the software by typing the name into an X console (unless you really want to invoke the command line version).
If you really need Java for whatever reason, go to www.blackdown.org and read about the Debian packages there.
Yes i tried running the
Yes i tried running the programs!
I've installed sun java by downloading a version, using alien to make it into a .deb file then unpacking using dpkg and i just followed the instructions on the sun java website after that.
Still no joy though so it probably wasnt that.
Any ideas? tried uninstalling then reinstalling gtk-gnutella, and it didnt do anything. Although that one has the edge on limewire cos lw doesnt even make the disk light come on.

Sorry, this program is too ancient to run without

You will then be able to run this version forever, but
please consider upgrading, as Gnutella is an evolving

not harmful!

I still need help with
I still need help with gtk-gnutella! I tried getting a newer version but now it just seems to have disapeared from my computer!
I managed to get limewire to work after updating my distro then reinstalling sunjava using a different file and using fakeroot instead of dpkg, although i suspect it was the file wot did it! Here's the walkthrough i used: http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/142
Limewire is being annoying - it seems to bring up loads of unrelated wma files for some reason the current favourite, is something like 'prank phone call to steven speilberg' which always comes up with about 40 sources regardless of what i search for. Anyone know anything about this?
