Debian Jessie sound problem

I am new to the forum, but have been using Debian since Etch. I am having trouble with the sound on Jessie. The problem is that the sound is simply too loud. Applications like games are much too loud. Music files play too loudly unless the sound is set to almost zero. If the volume is set to anything much above zero, then the sound blasts and distorts. Games are always too loud. I am using an old HP laptop (from the Windows XP era with a Celeron D chip) with an Intel sound card. I tried live Jessie images and installs using Gnome, Mate, KDE, and Xfce. Same problem with all. Wheezy with Gnome had a similar problem for this laptop, but didn't have the issue with KDE media players or with Gnome media players in later point releases. Any help or ideas is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
