Desktop memory usageI recently ran across this link which has some interesting results from tests of common X window managers/desktops (and apps) regarding how much memory they use. This was done a while ago, and I was wondering if anyone has similar tests/results from more recent versions of X GUIs. Thoughts? |
rewards devotion to one desktop
So the most efficient use of memory is achieved by sticking to either Gnome or KDE. I use XFCE, but since there aren't many native XFCE apps, I end up mixing and matching based on my personal preference. If you stay within a given desktop environment, you minimize the number of shared libraries in use. That's the basic lesson in the article. 3rd party desktop environments end up looking pretty poor because they HAVE to borrow libraries from the KDE or Gnome. Of course, KDE and Gnome may not look so good either of you are running konqueror, thunderbird, and openoffice.
