lircd not reading config file

Hi,
i have installed lirc 0.8.0-9 on a Debain etch system. I want to configure it to work with my Hauppauge PVR 350 remote control. There is a file /usr/share/lirc/remotes/hauppauge/lircd.conf.hauppauge containing a driver "Hauppauge_350". Sounds good. But i don't manage to get lircd to use this file.
I tried
lircd --driver=help /usr/share/lirc/remotes/hauppauge/lircd.conf.hauppauge

But then i don't see the drivers from the file above but some default drivers:

pvr:/usr/share/lirc/remotes/hauppauge# lircd --driver=help /usr/share/lirc/remotes/hauppauge/lircd.conf.hauppauge

I tried other things like copying that config file to /etc/lircd.conf, /etc/lirc/lircd.conf but there is always the same list of drivers. What else can i do?
