insurance software

Hello,

I'm looking for some free software for insurance business. A friend of
mine is going to migrate all his client's data to a new (commercial)
application, but before he does I'd like to make him consider other
(free) options, if there are any (which might be unlikely, give that
this is a rather specific business area).

I'd be very grateful for any information you could provide.

Thanks a lot and Happy New Year, Manuel

Hi Manuel,
I am not aware of any specific software for the Insurance industry. You
might check freshmeat.net and sourceforge for something. Although there
may be something that can be adapted to his/her needs. Maybe he/she can
write a specification this software and see if anyone may want to do it.
There are even people who create monitary bounties for software.
Cheers,
Kev

I think you will struggle to find a direct replacement for proprietry
insurance systems but more information might help. Is this life or
general insurance and what does he want to do with the information?

A database or PIM application may do what he wants but it will require
time and effort to learn/develop a solution.

If you can't find a ready-made free solution, you can piece it together:
a database (e.g. postgresql), with a custom front-end in python.

Hello, Like a month ago I posted a question. I'd like to thank you for your replies, I'll send them to my friend so he'll have more information to decide. All the same, your replies coincide with what he thought (that it would be difficult to find any free software solution for such a specific business area).
Doug, I think what he needs is too complex to be worth developing from scratch..Clive, if he's interested he'll reply to your questions so I'll give you more information. Kev, what are monitary bounties?
Cheers! ManuelOn Thu, Dec 28, 2006 at 02:59:49PM +0100, Manuel Souto Pico wrote:

If the free software world, there are websites where you can advertise
something you would like for someone to do. In this case, make an
insurance program. And you then say what you may be willing to pay for
it. There might be other people who would also like to see such a
program and those folks might want to add more money to your 'bounty' to
make it more attractive to a programmer. There may also be the
expectation that this work would be put under a free software license
so that the work can be improved upon and used by other insurance
companies. One example is Bhutan, they wanted someone to make a
Gnu/Linux system for them that used the tibetan language -- a very
obsure language used by less than a million people. They ask Microsoft
and got an offer of 500,000 usd. So free software consultants did it for
50,000usd. So if you are willing to put the software under a free
license, folks may be willing to do it cheaper since the end result will
benefit more people.
