System Won't Start ProperlyI'm new to the Debian OS. I have been using the system for a few months. I don't remember if I had updated the OS before the boot process failed to completely restart. It gets through the fsck, but the last line in the display is the following: EXT3 FS 2.4-0.9.19, 19 August 2002 on ide0(3,1), internal journal Is there any defined process for fixing the boot process, or do I need to just focus on trying to recover the data? Any help you can provide would be appreciated. TIA. Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.4.27-2-386. |
depends ...
If you have the 'grub' bootloader, bring up the command line and boot your old(er) kernel.
Oterwise, boot from a live CD and switch back to the older kernel (if possible) - and if it's not possible to switch back to the older one, then fix it.
Don't forget to look at the system logs after you boot from the CD (the logs on the HD) - they might give you some clue as to where things went wrong. I had one machine that had a faulty framebuffer driver which caused a hang at boot - deleting the driver restored the system to normal.
