The debian-installer list might be the place to ask. Or at least
they could point you where to ask.

Ask on debian-boot.
I don't do Ubuntu. I _think_ that the reason that some find newer
hardware supported is that they use a newer kernel. Newer than what, I
don't know. When bleeding-edge hardware gest support in the kernel
upstream, it takes some time to get through unstable (Sid) into testing
(currently Etch). But at least when it does, it has been tested to some
extent and doesn't break other stuff.
So first see if Etch solves it for you.

Thanks for the responses to contact debian-installer and debian-boot.
I'm already using Etch, so I know the modules aren't there. I'll try to
do a little work and find the source code for whatever kernel is in
unstable and see if I find it. I did already look at
packages.debian.org, but I couldn't really find much of anything but
meta packages for kernel images in unstable. Hopefully I'll have more
time to look for it over the weekend.
