Yeah, this is definitely related to what theme is being used. I had
that problem with the early versions of Firefox too, and the fix was
just installing and using a different theme.

Switching to a different theme does solve the problem, but it shouldn't
be necessary to do so.

This happened to me as well. Changing the default theme of Debian (called "Simple", I think, when running Gnome as the desktop environment) to anything else, fixes it. Just open the desktop theme preferences.
